About me
I am so happy to be a new member of the Thomas E. Kerns team. I graduated from Clemson University in 2013 with a degree in Multi-Categorial Special Education. I have my teaching certificates in both Multi-Categorical Special Education and Elementary Education. I spent my first seven years teaching in a special education class, four years working with student with severe autism and three years working with students who have specific learning disability.
In 2020, I decided to take a break from teaching because I had a little boy on September 2nd. I have spent the last three years being a mom first. I decided I was ready to get back into the classroom this year. Special Education will always hold a special place in my heart, but I wanted to apply what I have found to be successful in my special education classroom to the general education setting.
When I was a little girl, I was diagnosed with ADHD which made learning extremely difficult for me. I got really behind in reading and struggled to stay focus. My grades really suffered in Elementary School. By middle school, I was able to better focus and my reading scores began to improve. When I was in 8th grade, I no longer required extra instruction from a special education teacher to comprehend what I was reading. I made it through high school with all As and Bs and graduated Clemson with high honors.
I am sharing all of this about myself to say, if you have a student who is struggling to learn, it is okay. Just because they struggle now, does not mean they will struggle forever. As long as we work together as a team, your struggling kiddo can close the gap and reach their dreams, whatever that may be. We are all capable of doing great things. My own struggles in school and having really good teachers, is why I became a teacher. I wanted to give back to the world, what the world gave to me.
