Hi there! My name is Ms. Foltz. This is my fifth year at BRHS! This is my 11th year of teaching. My passion for Marine Science began at Furman University when I did internships with Mote Marine Laboratory and New Zealand Whale and Dolphin Trust. I then went on to get my Master's degree in Marine Science at Hawaii Pacific University. I taught in Charleston, SC for 1 year and then for five years in Hawaii before moving home to South Carolina. I have a background in research on whale and dolphin species, and I studied and published research on the threat of environmental toxins to endangered false killer whales in the Main Hawaiian Islands. I also studied molecular pathways linked to environmental toxins in stranded cetaceans found in Hawaii. I love talking marine biology, and I also enjoy teaching chemistry here at BRHS!
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my son, coaching cross country, enjoying nature (hiking, running), and taking a trip to the beach to surf! I am excited to teach Marine Science and Chemistry this year. In Marine Science, we will learn about everything from the deep ocean and exploration, ocean circulation and weather patterns, the variety of life forms in the ocean, and how humans impact the ocean's chemistry and biology. My goal for my students is for them to leave my class with a sense of appreciation for the ocean and how we can protect the life that calls it home both now and in future generations. In Chemistry, we will learn all about matter, the periodic table and trends, and different forms of chemical reactions. I hope it will be a great year for all my students!
