Attendance Policies
Click here to submit an absence note for your child.
Your child’s regular and prompt attendance at school is crucial to his/her success. Most of our learning activities are group oriented and involve interaction with classmates. Please view school as a priority and see to it that your child attends every day, except in cases of illness or an emergency. Please try to schedule medical appointments after school hours or on student holidays.
Changes in Transportation
If you wish for your child's transportation to change for a particular day, please send a written note. An email is also acceptable. If no note is received, your child will be sent home by his/her usual method of transportation. All notes must have the following information: the date, teacher name, student's first and last name, and a parent signature.
Early Dismissals
Please send a note in the morning if you plan to pick your child up early. Check in at the office to sign your child out and the office staff will call for your child to meet you there. There will be no early dismissals after 1:45p.m.
Parent Communication
E-mail is the best way to reach your child’s teacher. Please allow 24 hours for a reply. Messages received after 3:30 p.m. may be returned the next school day. If you have not received a reply within 24 business hours, please contact your child’s teacher by voicemail as your email may have been blocked or undelivered by our email server. If you have an immediate need during the school day, please contact the Buena Vista front office at 864-355-2201 as we may not check email during instructional hours.
Your child will have a weekly communication folder which will include important flyers, forms, and graded assignments. Many assignments will be given through Google Classroom, however, and paper grades may not be sent home for those assignments. In order to access your child’s grades, please log onto Parent Backpack or have your child log onto Student Backpack. Please allow at least 5 business days from an assignment’s due date for Backpack to be updated. Please contact the Buena Vista front office at 864-355-2201 if you need assistance setting up a Parent Backpack account.
Your child’s teacher will post a weekly newsletter to her website by 5:00 p.m. each Friday for the following week. The weekly newsletter will include upcoming topics of learning as well as important dates, such as tests and special events.
Fall conferences will be held at the end of the first quarter for all students. Please contact your child’s teacher if and when you would like to set up additional conferences during the year.
Parent Participation
Throughout the school year there will be a variety of special classroom activities and celebrations. I encourage you to attend these functions when possible and to support them. Your support of school activities makes your child feel important and sends the message that you value school.
Lunch
Lunch money is collected in the cafeteria. It can be paid daily or weekly. Money may be deposited into your child’s account. Please read the menu for daily lunch selections and price information. Menus are subject to change. No “fast foods” are allowed in the lunchroom for students, teachers, staff, parents, or guests.
Outdoor Recess
The children will be having recess every day, unless there is inclement weather. We will try to be creative to provide a quality time for the children at recess. Please keep this in mind when helping your child select clothing for the day.
Grading
A= 90-100
B= 80-89
C= 70-79

Birthdays
Due to the fact that we are a participating C.A.T.C.H school, no birthday treats will be allowed in the lunchroom or classroom. PTA will provide a birthday treat, school-wide, once per month. We will celebrate summer birthdays in May. Birthday invitations may only be given out as long as each child in the class is invited.
Dress Code
Students are encouraged to wear comfortable, clean clothing which is suited for the weather. Shoes should be worn at all times. Caps and hats may not be worn in the building. Please make sure that all shirts or tops meet the waist band. Stomachs should be covered at all times. If children are sent to school in shorts, they should be long enough to completely cover the top of the legs to within two to three inches of the knee. The primary objective of Greenville County Schools (GCS) is to provide a World-Class instructional program and learning opportunity for every student. The personal appearance of every student is an important component of establishing a safe environment for optimal learning and respect for one another. Students are expected to dress in an appropriate manner while on school district property or representing the school. Personal appearance shall be such that it does not disrupt student work or school order, become distractive to other students, or violate health and safety guidelines.
Student dress and grooming will be neat and clean. Shoes or sandals will be worn. Flip-flops (shower-type shoes) are not permitted. No bare midriff shirts or blouses will be permitted. No tank tops, spaghetti strap tops, halter-tops, or vests without shirts will be permitted. Shoulder straps have to be a minimum of l inch wide. No see-through or mesh garments may be worn. Hats, sunglasses, hair curlers, skullies, or do-rags may not be worn. No clothing or jewelry will be permitted that displays profanity, suggestive phrases, alcohol, tobacco, drug advertisements, or other inappropriate phrases or symbols. Shorts may be worn; however, they must be properly fitted and in good taste and may not be shorter than mid-thigh. Biker shorts or athletic shorts of any kind are not permitted. Clothing that inappropriately exposes body parts or underclothing is not permitted. Trousers/slacks/shorts must be worn at waist level. Because of safety reasons, excessively baggy trousers and clothing are not permitted. Non-human colored hair is not permitted.
District Behavior Plan
Students are expected to follow the expectations posted in the classroom. Students, parents, and teachers will be asked to sign a school compact. The Greenville County Schools Discipline code will also be enforced.
The school handbook, as well as classroom expectations and procedures, are discussed and practiced during the beginning of school. These expectations and procedures are reviewed periodically throughout the year.
Class Behavior Plan
Individual Behavior: Students will be getting punch cards and once they receive 10 positive punches, their behavior will be rewarded. Negative behaviors operate under a clear steps system, such as a private warning, silent lunch (situation depending), parent contact, and administration contact. In addition, all verbal bullying results in a phone call home with the child present during the school day. Then, all physical bullying results in immediate administration contact.
Class Behavior: We do a mystery student for every subject that either earns us a green or a red for the period. Each green period results in the student being announced and praised. They earn our class 1 minute of extra recess for Friday. Each red period results in behaviors being shared that did not meet expectations, but the student's name will be kept private.
