WELCOME:
I am so excited that you have chosen to take my course and learn more about a subject that I love!!! This should be an enjoyable class, however it requires you to put in the time and effort. By the time you leave this class I hope to have expanded your knowledge and respect for the health field. Not only will we learn about medical terminology, we will also include topics that can be used in daily life, no matter what career you choose. From the first day, I want to say…stick with it, no matter how tough it might get! I am here to help and want you to be a success!

Course Description:
Medical terminology is designed to develop a working knowledge of the language of health professions. Students acquire word-building skills by learning prefixes, suffixes, roots, combining forms, and abbreviations. Utilizing a body systems approach, students will define, interpret, and pronounce medical terms relating to structure and function, pathology, diagnosis, clinical procedures, and pharmacology. Students will use problem-solving techniques to assist in developing an understanding of course concepts.
Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to interpret, construct and apply medical terminology commonly used in the healthcare setting.

Materials:
-Textbook:Ehrlich, Ann Introduction to Medical Terminology 9th Edition Delmar,Cengage Learning,Standfort, CT, 2022. (Textbooks are online. Students can access the textbook by signing into NGL Sync and entering course key provided in Google Classroom).
-Notebook: (1 ½-2 in) (Mostly for keeping up with handouts)
-Other suggested material: pens, paper, pencils, poster boards (2/year): 3x5 index cards, 300 count (2 packs)
-The majority of notes can be taken online via Google docs through Google classroom. Students are required to bring their Chromebook to take notes and complete classroom assignments. Students will be responsible for copying/completing notes on their own.

Greenville County Grading Scale:
A: (90-100) Exceeds expectations; B: (80-89) Meets standards/expectations; C: (70-79) Passing grade but does not meet some standards; D: (69-60) Passing, but only meets minimum; F: (59-0) Failing, does not meet minimum standards.
Grading:
Major grades (60%): announced tests/projects; major labs;
Minor grades (40%): daily grades/classwork; minor practice labs; current events; quizzes
Testing/Project Schedule:
Tests will be announced days in advance. The majority of quizzes will be announced at least one day in advance with the exception of an occasional pop quiz. Expectations and rubrics will be provided as projects are assigned.
Make-up Work/Test Policy/Late Work:
All assignments are required to be made up regardless of reason for absence. Lab and participation grades may require alternate written work, but will be discussed on an individual basis. Major assignments may have an extension if turned in late with the following criteria: The maximum that the student can achieve is 75%. I am striving to teach students to be professionals. A part of this is completing assignments on time when the “boss” of their future careers creates a deadline.
Students are expected to make up tests on my tutoring days (Tuesday 3:45-4:15) or their lunch period in my classroom. Students will need to schedule make-up prior to the day so that a pass can be provided. The Health Science class is not to be used as a secondary cafeteria by any of my students, unless they need to bring lunch with them during a lunch make-up session.

Also, at various times throughout the year we may have opportunities to see and hear from different healthcare professionals. It is up to the discretion of the instructor to allow a student to participate in an opportunity based on:
1. Be considerate, courteous and respectful of yourself, classmates, teachers, administrators and guests by demonstrating good ethics and character.
2. Listen to and follow directions showing good work habits at all times in the class and lab by using tools and equipment properly and efficiently. This includes using cell phones/Chromebook for assigned work, not for other classes.
3. Be punctual and prepared for class participation by contributing in class discussion and having necessary classroom material and/or homework.
4. Complete individual and group projects/tasks/assignments during the allotted time and not waste precious class time. If you or your group members have not completed the task assigned by the due date. It will be your responsibility to complete the work outside of class as necessary.
5. Show respect for school property and property of others.
6. Inappropriate/immature behavior in class and/or lab will not be tolerated.
7. No food is allowed in the lab area of the classroom.
8. Profanity will not be tolerated.
9. Come into the classroom quietly every day and begin on the Bell Ringer assignment listed on the board while waiting on class to start without having to be told to do so.
10. Media: Throughout the year a variety of multimedia will be used in order to convey the standards. Video clips of different surgeries, injuries, and/or conditions will be shown to enhance learning and understanding. This is a health science class and students are expected to behave with maturity as future healthcare professionals.
In addition to general school district policies and procedures, there is one basic classroom rule.
RESPECT
1. Respect all teachers and staff members at Greer High School.
2. Respect all fellow students at all times.
3. Respect all supplies and equipment in the classroom.
4. Respect yourself. Offer yourself the best chance for success by coming to class well rested, well prepared, and motivated.
Classroom Policies/Consequences:
Please be advised that the following are only applicable for simple infractions within the classroom such as not following directions. Refer to the student handbook for detailed items/consequences that require different disciplinary actions.
1st offense: verbal warning for student
2nd offense: student/teacher conference
3rd offense: parent/teacher conference via e-mail, phone, or face-to-face meeting
4th offense: student referred to administration for further disciplinary instruction
Any major violation that cannot be resolved between student and instructor will result in immediate removal of the student from the classroom and/or lab for the day. Students will not be able to resume participation in lab activity until a conference with parent(s) or guardian(s), the instructor, student and/or an administrator from Greer High School. Any lab activities missed because of violations will not be allowed a make-up opportunity and result in a zero for the activity.
Attendance/Tardy Policy:
The school-wide attendance and tardy policy will be adhered to. Please refer to the student handbook found on the school’s webpage for additional info. The door will close as soon as the bell rings. Student must have a pass to enter class after the bell rings
