Math 6 Syllabus - League Academy
This unit focuses on creating a deeper understanding of variability, using measures of center and measures of spread to describe and compare data distributions. This unit will use box plots to represent and analyze data distributions. Students will: summarize, describe, and interpret data in box plots; determine and use medians and modes of data sets; identify and use range and and interquartile range to describe a data set and use measures of variation to compare two data sets; divide multi-digit whole number and decimals; choose appropriate measure of center and variation to describe and interpret data.
Ratios and Rates
Students begin formally exploring ratios, rates, and percents as comparative tools, progressing to more abstract representations. Specifically, students will understand ratios as a comparison of quantities. They apply ratio reasoning to solve problems, understand rates as a kind of ratio that compares quantities that may have different units and understand percentages as a kind of ratio with a whole always equal to 100.
Understand and Use Percentages
This unit focuses on developing an understanding of the concept of percentages. The unit will connect what students learned about ratios and rate reasoning to percent of a whole.
Solve Area, Surface Area, and Volume Problems
This unit focuses on students' geometric and spatial thinking in the real world. Students formalize their understanding by visualizing, composing and decomposing figures to develop area formulas. They visualize edges and faces of 3-D figures that are not visible from the viewpoint used to draw them. The concepts of area, surface area, and volume are introduced. Students will find the area of parallelograms, rhombuses, triangles, trapezoids, and polygons by composing or decomposing figures into other figures or using a formula, determine volumes of rectangular prisms using unit cubes or a formula, make nests for 3-D figures and identify 3-D figures based on nets, and determine surface area of rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, rectangular pyramids, and triangular pyramids. In addition to this, students use a protractor to measure angles, add and subtract angle measures to find new angle measures, use the definition of complementary and supplementary angles to find angle measures.
Numerical and Algebraic Expressions
In this unit, students will learn to solve problems involving fractions, whole numbers, and mixed numbers using equations and models. They will write and evaluate numerical and algebraic expressions using exponents and the order of operations. Students will explore how to identify and create equivalent expressions using properties of operations and find the greatest common factor (GCF) and least common multiple (LCM). Through this, they will build foundational skills in numeric expressions that prepare them for future work with algebraic expressions and universal mathematical properties.
Integers, Rational Numbers, and the Coordinate Plane
This unit focuses on extending students’ understanding of rational numbers to include negative numbers. Students will be introduced to all four quadrants of the coordinate plane in this unit.Students will: explore locations of rational numbers and their opposites on a number line; explore absolute value; use the number line to compare and order rational numbers; plot points on the coordinate plane and describe the location of points; find the distance between points on the coordinate plane; find side lengths of polygons on the coordinate plane using absolute value.
Equations and Inequalities
This unit builds on the study of algebraic expressions that we started earlier in the year.. Students will understand that an equation with a variable has a solution: a number that makes the equation true. They will also understand that an inequality has a solution set.
Students will write and solve equations involving one variable; write and solve one-step equations using all four operations; write inequalities to represent real-world and mathematical problems; draw number lines graphs to represent inequalities and use substitution to test solutions.
Relationships Between Two Variables
This unit focuses on quantitative relationships between two variables. Students build on their knowledge of cause and effect and modeling it with a two-variable relationship. Students recognize that two variable quantitative relationships exist in many facets of our lives with applications such as money, distance, time, etc. Students will identify independent and dependent variables, find the value of the dependent variable given a relationship between two quantities, use tables and graphs to find and analyze the relationship between two quantities and to write an equation to show the relationship between independent and dependent variables, write an equation to show the relationship between two quantities and then use it to solve a problem.
Operations with Integers
Students will add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers.

Types of Assignments
Each nine-week grading period will include:
Minor assignments (50%) - Minor assessments are designed to monitor student understanding throughout the learning process and provide timely feedback to guide instruction. These assessments occur more frequently and may include, quizzes, exit tickets, teacher observations, Google Forms, rubrics, checklists, group tasks, and other formative measures.
Major assignments (50%) - Major assessments are designed to measure a student's deep understanding and application of grade-level standards and therefore carry greater weight in the overall grade. These assessments occur less frequently and often represent the culmination of a unit of study. Examples include projects, performances, portfolios, and unit tests.
Missing Work Due to Not Handed In (Late Work)
Any work that is not handed in by the due date will be recorded in the gradebook as a code of NHI. The code of NHI equates to a score of zero in the gradebook.
Students will have five (5) school days from the recording of an NHI in the gradebook to turn in that assignment.
Missing Work Due to Student Absences
Any work missed because of a student absence will be recorded as MDA.
The code of MDA equates to a score of zero in the gradebook and will impact the student’s overall grade until the work is submitted.
Students have five (5) school days after returning from an excused absence to submit missed work unless alternative arrangements are made. If alternative arrangements have not been made with the teacher, a grade of zero will remain as the grade for the missing work.
Once the teacher grades the submitted work and enters the grade into the gradebook, the code of MDA will be replaced with the grade.
Redo/Retake Policy
Students may request a retake for any MAJOR assessment in the quarter. To do this a student must:
Complete a Retake Request Form
Complete the required remediation work before retaking the assessment.
Have all minor assignments turned in for that unit.
Coordinate with the teacher a time to complete the retake of the assessment.
A Few Important Notes
Only MAJOR assignments are eligible for retakes/ revision.
Students have five (5) school days from the date the grade is entered into the gradebook to request a retake.
All retakes must happen before the end of the grading quarter — no retakes will be allowed after that.
The higher of the two scores will be recorded as the final grade.
Students may be required to retake an assessment at teacher discretion.
Homework:
Homework often is work that was not completed in class. Students should review their notes daily as well.
When homework is given, assignments shall reflect the following guidelines:
Homework shall include one or more of the three generally recognized types of homework:
Practice: reinforces newly acquired skills taught in class
Preparation: helps students prepare for upcoming lessons, activities, or tests
Extension: provides challenging, often long-term opportunities for enrichment that parallel class work
Daily homework assignments for middle school students shall not exceed 90 minutes.
If homework is graded, the homework average shall count no more than 10% of the overall quarterly grade at the middle school and high school levels.
Magic School
This year, students will use MagicSchool AI, a generative AI platform designed specifically for education. As tools like ChatGPT and Gemini become standard in the professional world, utilizing MagicSchool prepares students for the future workforce by teaching safe and responsible technology use.
Students will use these tools for real-time feedback and dynamic problem-solving. To ensure appropriate use, teachers retain access to all student chats. MagicSchool strictly protects privacy and does not collect or utilize student data. All AI software, including MagicSchool, complies with GCS Board Policy and Administrative Rule IA.
Generative AI
This course may utilize generative AI tools, such as MagicSchool and Google Gemini, to supplement traditional instruction. Greenville County Schools prioritizes the ethical use of these technologies for brainstorming and self-guided learning.
Critical Thinking First: AI must not replace original thought or coursework.
Academic Integrity: Using AI to complete and submit assignments as original work constitutes plagiarism.
Required Citation: If teacher-approved, all AI use must be properly cited.

This standards-based eighth grade course places strong emphasis on applications of the mathematical concepts and skills related to decimals, fractions, percents, and integers to solving a variety of real-world problems. In addition, students will extend their understanding of the concepts proportion and measurement and apply this knowledge in problem-solving situations. Students will further develop their algebraic thinking by investigating the merits and limitations of graphical, symbolic, tabular, and verbal representations of relationships. Throughout the course there is an emphasis on the SCCCR mathematical process standards of problem-solving, communication, reasoning, representations, and connections. PREREQUISITE: Math 7
