Barnes Syllabus
2025-2026
Classroom Expectations
Respect and responsibility are our classroom objectives. We focus on respecting ourselves, each other, and our school. Each child is expected to be responsible for themselves, their belongings, and their actions.
Prize Box
Each Friday is Prize Box day. Students are able to earn a trip to the prize box by following classroom rules and behaving respectfully.
Curriculum
We will use the Sounds Sensible and SPIRE curriculum for reading and ELA this year and Saxon Math and Touch Math for mathematics. Both of these are multi-sensory data-driven approaches.
Communication
Communication is key to a successful school year. Each of you have my number and email. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns at all. We will work together to encourage your child to have the BEST year ever!
Paraprofessionals
We are so blessed to have two amazing paraprofessionals in our room this year. Mrs. Kim and Mrs. Breitigan are important and our classroom would not run efficiently without them. Please encourage your child to treat both of them with respect.
Attendance
School begins at 7:45. The carline can be very hectic. It is easier to navigate the carline if you plan on arriving to school by 7:30. If you would like to drop your child off in the back carline to avoid the traffic, please arrive no later than 7:20. We will meet you at the back car loop then.
Change of Clothes
Please send a complete change of clothes labeled with your child’s name in case your child has an accident or spills something. Please make sure each piece of clothing is labeled as well as the ziploc bag they are in.
Daily Communication Folder
There will be a daily folder that comes home with your child each day. Please check your child’s folder every day. There will be a behavior log that needs to be initiated each night as well as any important information. If you have anything that needs turned in to school, please place it in the folder.
Homework
After Labor Day, your child will bring home a homework bag Monday-Thursday. In the bag will be flashcards and small books. Each child’s bag will be individualized based on what they are working on. Please take time to review each evening.
Family Projects
Each month a family project will come home. This is a wonderful opportunity to spend time with your child. The children enjoy sharing their fun projects with their classmates.
Independence
Children thrive when they learn new things and are responsible for something new. We will encourage them to take care of their own belongings as well as classroom belongings each day. Now is a great time to work on putting shoes on independently, unpacking backpacks at home, and opening lunch items. We are allotted 25 minutes for lunch each day and that includes the time it takes to walk through the lunch line and clean up.
Health Room
Hopefully this will be a very healthy school year. However, if your child falls ill. Please note that they must be fever free and diarrhea/vomit free for 24 hours without medication before returning to school. Please send an email to me at jlbarnes@greenville.k12.sc.us and to the attendance office at cgrant@greenville.k12.sc.us.
Early Dismissal/Change of Transportation
If your child will be picked up early or go home a different way than usual, please send an email to me at jlbarnes@greenville.k12.sc.us and to the front office achilds@greenville.k12.sc.us and arcraig@greenville.k12.sc.us. Requests must be in writing.
Field Trips/Volunteer
If you would like to chaperone a field trip or volunteer in the classroom, please fill out the paperwork to be a Level 2 chaperone. This needs to be updated every few years. If you have filled out the Level 2 paperwork in the past, please contact the office to make sure your approval does not need renewed.
