When I was in early elementary school, I always taught summer school in my garage to our neighborhood kids! I have no idea why they would come to my house to have summer school! I actually made up assignments and sent them home with homework! We always had a fun time!!! And we put on the greatest plays! Peter Rabbit was a neighborhood highlight! We also held a neighborhood Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Carnival to raise money for that organization.
I started playing piano in 3rd grade and the violin in 4th grade. Since that time, I knew I wanted to be a music teacher and teaching music has been my life objective. I was involved in as many musical ensembles that I could be in at school and in the community. I played in the Flint Youth Orchestras every Saturday morning from 5th -12th grade. I helped out in the orchestra pits for local musicals and had the honor of playing in the orchestra for Christmas at Whiting. A Christmas variety show at the beautiful Whiting Auditorium in Flint, MI. In high school I also played in the percussion section in marching and concert band and played piano for the girls’ chorus.
In December of 1981, I completed my Bachelor of Music degree with a combined music education major in choral and instrumental from Houghton College in Houghton, NY. In August of 1981, I completed a Master of Arts degree in Music Ed. from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, PA. I also have taken numerous post graduate courses in teaching strings and conducting.
My life goal became a reality when I obtained my first teaching position in 1981 and I am still happily teaching full time in strings! I enjoy teaching students of all ages and introducing them to musical experiences that will encourage them to gain an appreciation and love for music. The opportunity to direct and inspire students in music is exciting. Music education is a key element in developing a well-rounded individual and a valuable treasure that they can nurture and enjoy for a lifetime. I became the orchestra director at Greer Middle School in 2014.
I met my husband, while in graduate school. We have 2 married daughters and five precious grandchildren. Summer, is my favorite time of the year. I enjoy cooking, gardening, and love Christmas music and Christmas movies!
