Tryouts
Tryouts forall interested swimmers (including returning swimmers) will be held on August 5th from 6-7:30 AM (yes, AM) at the McCarter pool at 198 Mccarter Avenue 29615.Please arrive by 5:45 AM.
The tryout will consist of each swimmer swimming a fast, timed 100 of each stroke (butterfly, backstroke, and breaststroke) and a 200 freestyle from the starting block. Swimmers must be able to legally swim a 100 of each swimming stroke to try out for the WHHS Swim Team.
Not sure if you are able to swim all 4 strokes legally? These videos can help to determine if your strokes are legal:
Before tryouts, swimmers must have a complete profile in PlanetHS. Coaches will verify completion of PlanetHS registration prior to try-out. Please do not wait until the last minute to complete your profile. If you need assistance with PlanetHS please refer to this form.
Physicals must be completed after April 1, 2024. Any swimmer who submits a physical that is dated before this date will not be eligible to tryout or practice until a new physical is submitted and uploaded to PlanetHS.
School insurance must be paid prior to participating in the tryout. The fee for the 2024-2025 school year will be $33. Checks can be made out to Wade Hampton High School and paid on the day of the tryout.
Students who try out must be zoned for WHHS or ATTENDING WHHS through special permission (FAC, etc…)
Please let coaches know if you have any special circumstances. For example, you are a student at a charter middle school, attended a high school other than WHHS last year, or are homeschooled. If so, there is additional required paperwork in these circumstances in order for swimmers to be eligible to try out/swim for WHHS. Students who are enrolled in a private school are not permitted to participate in public high school sports.
If you plan to attend the tryout, please complete this form. If a swimmer is unable to attend the tryout, please contact Coach Nelson at heatherbnelson.uga@gmail.com.
***Inability to attend tryouts should be limited to extreme circumstances. Since we are doing the tryout so close to the start of school, all swimmers should be able to participate.
Swimmers will be notified by 6:00 PM on the 5th with the results of the tryout. Insurance fees will be returned via mail to the address on the check to swimmers who do not make the team.
Please note Swimming is a Varsity sport at WHHS. There are no JV, C, or D teams. Space on the team is limited due to the following: safety concerns, pool space, bus capacity when traveling to meets, and entry limits at meets.
Registration for Swimmers Who Make the Team
Once a swimmer has been notified that he or she has made the team, the swimmer should register on Swimtopia. A link to the Swimtopia registration site will be sent with the notification email.
Booster fees will need to be paid by August 7th (FIRM). Booster fee will be at least $85. Final amount will be provided in the registration information.
If the swimmer’s family is unable to pay the Booster Fee due to hardship, please contact one of the coaches.
Practice Times
Practice times will be from 6-7:15 AM Monday-Thursday at the Mccarter pool until mid-September.
At that point, we will move to indoor practice at the Kroc Center from 7-8 PM Monday-Thursday.
*Swimmers who swim for year-round teams may practice with their year-round team once that practice begins.
Two Sport Athletes
If you are considering two sports, please let us know immediately. Two sport athletes must attend at least two swim practices a week and all meets.
Region Meet Attendance Requirement
Participation in the Region Meet is a requirement for those who qualify.
Leadership Teams
In lieu of captains we will have Leadership teams. The teams will help carry the weight of the swim team. Seniors will get priority in choosing where they would like to serve. We will fill in other slots on the Leadership teams with Juniors and then Sophomores (if space is available).
Leadership Teams will likely be in these areas:
Facilities
Range of Motion/Dryland Warm Up
Spirit
Meet Organization
Lettering
There will be an attendance requirement (for practice) for lettering this year. Those who do not play a year-round sport are required to attend 80% of practices. Those who are 2 sport athletes are required to participate in 50% of the practices. All swimmers must participate in all qualified meets in order to letter. Year-round swimmers will be required to submit an attendance log that will be signed by their year-round coach in order to meet the 80% attendance requirement.
Suits/Caps
Our suits are Arena Puzzled in Red. These can be purchased on Swimoutlet.com. Girls may purchase the back of their choice. Boys may purchase the Arena Puzzled jammer or wear a plain black brief. The price of caps and a shirt is included in the team fee.
Volunteering
Please email Bekki Benjamin at bbenjami@greenville.k12.sc.us if you are willing to certify as a stroke and turn official and/or deck referee. We need at least 2-3 S&T and at least 1 deck ref/ starter. We do not have info yet from the High School League on training, but will let you know something as soon as we do.
We will also need 12-15 timers for each of our meets. Please plan to help WHHS meet our obligations to host or participate in a swim meet.
