ENGLISH II SYLLABUS
English Department Mission Statement: To empower students to be contributing members of society by producing critical thinkers who apply reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing skills in order to communicate effectively.
English Department Goals 2016-2017:
- All students will pass their appropriate English course on first attempt.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is an in-depth study of literature stressing techniques and literary modes and introducing universal themes of literature and argument. Grammar is studied as composition problems demand.
Instruction in composition includes the development of various writings with emphasis on evidence and making claims. Vocabulary and research skills are also required.
INSTRUCTIONAL PHILOSOPHY
In this course, students are expected to work independently, in pairs, and in groups. Students should come prepared with notebook, paper and pen.
COURSE GOALS
Reading
- The students will integrate various cues and strategies to comprehend what he or she reads.
- The student will use knowledge of the purposes, structures, and elements of writing to analyze and interpret various types of texts.
- The student will apply knowledge of word analysis strategies to determine the meaning of new words encountered in reading material and use them accurately.
Writing
- The student will apply a process approach to writing.
- The student will write for a variety of purposes.
- The student will respond to texts written by others.
- The student will create legible texts.
Communication
- The student will use speaking skills to participate in large and small groups in both formal and informal situations.
- The student will use listening skills to comprehend and analyze information he or she receives in both formal and informal situations.
- The student will comprehend and analyze information he or she receives from nonprint sources.
Research
- The student will select a topic for exploration.
- The student will gather information from a variety of sources.
- The student will use a variety, of strategies to prepare and present selected information.
MAJOR COURSE PROJECTS AND ASSIGNMENTS
- Novels : These include but are not limited to, Night, Anthem, and To Kill a Mockingbird.
- Drama: Macbeth, A Raisin in the Sun
- Research Paper
- At least six nonfiction selections
- At least eight short stories
- At least ten poems
Writing: reader response, argument, narrative, informational, literary analysis, cause and effect, comparison and contrast, and research
ASSESSMENT PLAN
Grades will be weighted as follows:
60% Major Assessments (Writing Assignments, Tests and Projects)
30% Minor Assessments (Brief Writing Assignments, Quizzes)
10%Minor Daily Work(Homework, Bellwork, classwork
