World Language Assessments:

Assessments in the world language classroom reflect and mirror performance-based instructional activities taking place in the classroom on a daily basis. They allow students to demonstrate what they know and can do in the language, showing their progress toward increased language proficiency in multiple ways using real-world tasks. In modern languages, a balance across the three modes of communication (two in classical languages) is critical. Gathering assessment evidence of these three modes (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational) reminds teacher and students that all three are necessary to function and communicate in real-world situations.

Interpretive tasks are one-way listening or reading activities in which students must demonstrate an understanding of what they have heard or read.

Examples: Listening to a news broadcast or radio commercial; reading a magazine article; viewing a video clip. While listening or viewing a selection, students can identify key words or important ideas, provide supporting details, and derive meaning from context (activities will vary depending on level).

Interpersonal tasks are two-way, interactive typically speaking activities that require students to communicate in a spontaneous manner without the use of a written script.

Examples: Mock interview, debate, face-to-face or telephone conversation, (activities will vary depending on level)

Presentational tasks are prepared, generally formal speaking or writing activities involving one-way communication to an audience of listeners or speakers.

Examples: Advertisement, list, graphic organizer, recipe, e-pal letter, news article, speech, essay, brochure, slogan, cartoon, booklet, glossary, puppet show, headline, handout, notes, journal, newscast, documentary, fact file, poster, description (activities will vary depending on level)

Note: Every Integrated Performance Assessment (final unit evaluation) is a cluster assessment which includes an interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational task. The three tasks are interrelated and aligned with a single theme and reflect the way in which students naturally use the language in the real world.
