Attendance Information
General Attendance Rules
Student's are required to attend school at least 170 of the 180 days in the school year in order to receive credit for your classes.
Parents or guardians can submit a note for non-medical absences such as illness not requiring a doctor's visit, a death in the family, vacation, or non-medical appointments like visits to the DMV.
Please note that for truancy (full day absences), only the first five parent notes per semester will be considered as "Parent Note". Any subsequent parent notes will be marked as "Unexcused" according to the District policy. Similarly, for seat time (absences per class), students are allowed only 5 parent notes per semester class and 3 parent notes per quarter class.
Parents may submit excuse notes electronically -- Please click on link listed above to submit a parent or medical note for your student's absence.
After 3 consecutive or 5 total unexcused absences during the school year, a student is considered to be truant. The attendance office will contact you if your student becomes truant.
Attendance is taken each class period throughout the day. Students are considered absent from a period if they miss more than half of that period. Students must remain in school for three hours to be considered present for the day. Therefore, they must arrive by 11:45 a.m. and leave no earlier than 12:45 p.m. to be considered present for their daily attendance record. The State Department of Education no longer recognizes perfect attendance.
Always contact the attendance office if you have any questions on these policies.
Seat Time Recovery
The objective of Seat Time Recovery is to allow students who are currently passing a course (or just below passing) and have more than the maximum number of absences, the opportunity to recover class hours by attending seat time recovery. STR will enable participants to make up the hours required to receive credit for a course.
STR is $10 per 3 hour session.
If additional unexcused absences accrue past the date above, additional STR hours will be required.
Serving STR DOES NOT excuse missed work. Makeup work must be coordinated with the teacher.
Seat Time Recovery Session Dates (4-7 pm at Eastside High School)
Please pay and schedule your STR hours in the attendance office at least 24 hours PRIOR to your chosen STR date
Tardies
Being tardy is a discipline issue and will never transfer to absences.
Tardies are cumulative and include both tardies to school and to individual classes.
Early Dismissals
Eastside is understanding of the fact that sometimes appointments have to be scheduled during school hours. We have 3 options for obtaining an early dismissal. For the safety of our student, no dismissals will be granted by phone, email or fax.
You may submit an early dismissal request via the link listed above.
A phone number is required so that the note can be verified. If we cannot reach you we will not be able to grant the dismissal. If you feel you will be difficult to reach you can call the attendance office in the morning and verify the dismissal prior to us calling you.
Student brings a handwritten note signed by a parent or guardian to school.
Note must contain time and reason for the dismissal
Note must contain a parent or guardian phone number so the note can be verified. If we cannot reach you we will not be able to grant the dismissal. If you feel you will be difficult to reach you can call the attendance office in the morning and verify the dismissal prior to us calling you.
Notes must be turned in before the student attends any classes in order to give time for the verification process.
If a student is not present for at least half of a class period he/she will not be given credit for that class.
It is the student’s responsibility to leave class at the appropriate time. The office will not call for them. They will come by the office and pick up the approved dismissal slip.
Parents may come to the front office with the appropriate identification and request a dismissal. Once their information has been verified the student will be called for dismissal.
College Visits
Seniors and Juniors are allowed three college visits per year. In order for these visits to be excused, students should submit documentation from the college to the attendance office when they return to school. At that time the absence will be coded as college visit (CV) and will not count against the student’s days.
