My name is John West and I teach Social Studies (US History, Human Geography) here at JL Mann High School. I am also the OLB/Special Teams Coordinator for the JV & Varsity Football teams. I grew up in Mauldin until I was 12 years old and went to Shannon Forest Christian School. I graduated high school from North Central High School in Kershaw, SC. Once I graduated, I attended Clemson University where I majored in Sports Communication and minored in Athletic Leadership. I always had the goal of working within football, however it wasn't until my sophomore year of undergraduate that I gained my love for coaching. Once I found my purpose in coaching, I began to work for Clemson Football in the Strength and Conditioning department. I worked for Clemson Football for 2+ years, while additionally obtaining my Master's degree in Secondary Education.
Outside of coaching and teaching, I only have time for a few hobbies. One activity I make time for during the week is going to church and spending time with God, which is very important in my life. Also, spending time with my wife, Laura, is one of my favorite things to do on the weekends no matter what the activity is. Another hobby I enjoy is lifting weights, as I have competed in a couple of powerlifting competitions. Additionally, I enjoy going to the movies with my family, as I am a huge movie buff.
My ultimate goal with coaching and teaching is to help students and athletes reach their highest potential and achieve their dreams. One thing I have learned from the places I have been is that one good year can change your life and if people put in relentless effort to chase their goals then there is nothing that cannot be achieved. I hope to provide to both the classroom and the field an undying energy that will inspire the students to achieve great things.
