COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This elective course involves a study of different types of law, their development, and their role in a democratic society. Emphasis will be placed on Constitutional Rights, citizen rights and responsibilities, law enforcement, the judicial system, liberty, and justice. Topics include Constitutional law, criminal law, juvenile justice, torts, consumer, family, and housing law, and individual rights and responsibilities. The course focuses on the interpretation of cases and law enforcement procedures.
UNITS OF INSTRUCTION: Over the course of the school year, we will be covering the following topics.
Unit 1: Introduction to Law and its Historical Foundations
Unit 2: Enlightenment Values and Liberty in the Law
Unit 3: Crime, Criminal Procedure, and Juvenile Justice
Unit 4: Pre-trial, Trial, Sentencing
Required materials: School issued Google Chromebook, 1 notebook, pencils, pens, paper, etc.
Classroom Behavior:
Be attentive and respectful during guest lectures or presentations.
Raise your hand and wait to be acknowledged before speaking or asking questions.
Avoid disruptive behavior during class activities and presentations.
Follow instructions and complete assignments on time.
Use appropriate language and tone during class discussions.
Remain seated during class, unless given permission to move around.
Avoid side conversations when someone else is speaking.

Major Assessment/Calculation of Grades:
1. Students will be tested as units are complete. Tests will be assessed as major grades. Tests will consist of textbook readings, notes, activities, classwork, videos, and class discussions both online and in-person (if applicable).
2. Classwork and activities will be assigned regularly and assessed as minor grades.
Grading Procedures: These percentages are in alignment with district policy.
Major Assessments (Tests and projects)-60%
Minor Assessments (Homework/Classwork, etc)-40%
Cell Phone Policy
Please be aware of the school and the district cell phone policy and the repercussions if violated.
Food
Please be aware that food is allowed at the teachers discretion. Snacks are allowed. Whole meals are not.
