Fall :  Now is the time to make decisions about attending a magnet middle school next year.  Check out the district website for information.  Sixth grade students have the opportunity to attend one of the district's four magnet programs:  Beck Academy, League Academy, Hughes Academy, and Greenville Middle Academy. Students must apply to attend a magnet program. Information about the magnet schools and the application process and deadlines can be found here: https://www.greenville.k12.sc.us/Parents/main.asp?titleid=magnet

January/February/March   5th graders will have a lesson with Ms. Day, focusing on middle school preparedness, Middle school field trips, Middle School curriculum nights, Middle School information session at BV, etc.

February:  Using district guidelines, teachers make academic recommendations for middle school.  Parents help students decide which electives they will choose.

Late February--Mid March :  Working with counselors, students make related arts choices and confirm academic courses.

All sixth graders take Science, Social Studies, PE, English, and Math.  Students may choose related arts courses based on what their middle school offers.  Each student will receive a related arts placement form to review with their families before we make choices here at school.  Students either take English Studies or English GT (if they are currently in challenge).  Students either take Math 6 or Math 6/7 based on criteria set by the district.   There are NO parent overrides allowed. All students are strongly encouraged to proceed with registering for a Greenville County middle school EVEN IF they plan to attend an out of district school.   This provides students with a secure schedule in the event that a family decides to change plans.

March:  Parents receive Student Request Letters

April:  Student Request Letters should be returned to BV with parent signatures

April:  Counselors send final request paperwork to appropriate middle schools

May:  Fifth grade classroom lessons with Ms. Day focus on middle school questions and success

SUMMER TIME:  Many local middle schools have a boot camp/get to know you time before school begins.  Check out the websites to see when these special times are.  Be sure you understand the dress code or uniform requirements of your child's middle school BEFORE you shop for back to school clothes.  Also, many schools don't allow rolling bookbags, so now might not be the time to buy a bookbag with wheels:/  Help your child practice opening a combination lock so they are confident when they have locks to open at middle school.  Practice calendar and organizational skills to help them keep track of assignments and due dates.
