General Course Description:
This Advanced Honors Art course is designed to re-emphasize the Elements and Principles of Design and to deepen the understanding of how to use them successfully when creating and composing art works. The students will continue using basic art critiquing skills and proper art terminology. They will also continue to learn about art history and techniques used throughout time. Students are expected to work at a higher level than a beginning Art student.
Instructional Objectives:
Throughout this course students will:
Ø Demonstrate and deeper understanding of the Elements and Principles of Design
Ø Use the Elements and Principles of Design to make art work that is at an advanced level
Ø Continue to “see” details and draw them correctly
Ø Continue using critiquing skills and proper terminology through class discussions and individual writings
Ø Learn about artists, movements, and styles throughout history and in other cultures

Make-up Work Policy
Make-up work is defined as work not completed or turned in due to a student’s absence.
This policy is set by the district.
Students may be allowed to make up work due to absences that are excused, unexcused or related to discipline with no penalty within 5 days or a reasonable time according to GCSD board policy.
If a student misses work due to an absence, it is the student’s responsibility to coordinate time with the teacher within 5 days of return to make up the work. Any work not submitted within the 5 day makeup period will turn into “late work.”
Alternative assignments may be given for performance-based tasks that cannot be recreated in a make-up format.
If a student is present on the day a test, quiz or project due date is announced and then absent on the day of the test, quiz or project deadline, he/she must be prepared to take the test, quiz or turn in the project on the day he/she returns to school.
Field trips and participation in other extracurricular events (such as athletics) are considered attendance days. Work missed due to such events can be submitted electronically by midnight on the day that it is due. Items that cannot be submitted electronically should be submitted the following attendance day.
Students are encouraged to utilize the before and after school tutoring programs to complete make-up and late work in a proactive manner.
Late Work Policy:
Teachers reserve the right to alter this policy based on extenuating circumstances. Extenuating circumstances should be discussed with the administration.
Late work is defined as work not completed/turned in on time even though the student attended the class.
Any assignment which is not turned in on time will be deducted 10 points off of the original grade earned for each school day the assignment is late up to five days.
After five days, the student will be assigned a 0 for the assignment.
Late work will not be accepted after the end of a grading period.
Students who have 504/IEP/ESOL accommodations specifically allowing for extra time may exceed the 5 day window to maintain compliance with their respective educational plan.
Dual Credit courses may have varying late work policies that are aligned with their parent university.

Materials:
*There is a $30 Materials Fee for this course. Make checks payable to Eastside High School and give to your instructor.
This fee will cover some art supplies used by the students including a sketchbook.
However, other materials a student may need that are specific to his or her own project will not be covered by this fee.
Students need to bring the following to class everyday:
Ø 2 full size pieces of Poster board that will be used to create a portfolio to keep the work protected. Students may purchase a portfolio if they choose not to make one.
Ø Most Painting Surfaces specific to the individual students. i.e. Canvas or wood panels, etc.
Ø Pencil or pens are required EVERYDAY
Ø Other Materials needed will be announced prior to the date needed.

Grading and Testing:
Major Grades – 60% Minor Grades – 40%
Ø All projects will be graded using a detailed rubric. Rubric includes a Completion portion where points will be deducted for late or incomplete work. See Late Work Policy
Ø Critiques will be held both formally and informally throughout the year. Written critiques will be scored based on a rubric.
Ø Each semester will conclude with a project or portfolio review were students will demonstrate skills learned throughout semester.
Ø Extra Credit Opportunities will consist of possible cultural events documented in a sketchbook.
Join National Art Honor Society! We will meet during eagle hour!
Fees are $15 for NAHS. 10 service hours all available through the club are required to be completed per semester. We will have monthly events on Saturdays and an End of the Year dinner to celebrate. NAHS is the major host for AVASE.
Rules and Procedures:
1. Have ALL materials ready at the BEGINNING of class (bell) and be in your seat ready to start with your PENCIL and SKETCHBOOK EVERYDAY!
2. Respect your fellow students and the Teacher, this includes the artwork and opinions of others.
3. Do NOT steal anything from anyone!
4. Be a good citizen and CLEAN UP all surfaces EVERYDAY!
5. NO ONE is allowed in the Shop Room or past the ORANGE LINE without permission from the instructor.
6. No one is to be in the Storage Area at any time without permission from the instructor.
7. Follow all school rules & guidelines found in your student handbook including the CELL PHONE POLICY.
8. NO headphones at any time. Remove BEFORE ENTERING the Art Room.
9. No Food on tables. EVER
10. No drinks on tables EVER.
11. No one is allowed to leave the room during instruction.
12. Each student is allowed one (1) bathroom break per week, not in the first or last 15 minutes of class.
13. *Once you have received an answer to your question, DO NOT continue to ask the question with hopes that the answer will change.*
14. When in doubt, use common sense.

This year, students will use MagicSchool AI, a generative AI platform designed specifically for education. As tools like ChatGPT and Gemini become standard in the professional world, utilizing MagicSchool prepares students for the future workforce by teaching safe and responsible technology use.
Students will use these tools for real-time feedback and dynamic problem-solving. To ensure appropriate use, teachers retain access to all student chats. MagicSchool strictly protects privacy and does not collect or utilize student data. All AI software, including MagicSchool, complies with GCS Board Policy and Administrative Rule IA.
This course may utilize generative AI tools, such as MagicSchool and Google Gemini, to supplement traditional instruction. Greenville County Schools prioritizes the ethical use of these technologies for brainstorming and self-guided learning.
Critical Thinking First: AI must not replace original thought or coursework.
Academic Integrity: Using AI to complete and submit assignments as original work constitutes plagiarism.
Required Citation: If teacher-approved, all AI use must be properly cited.
Content Awareness: Students must remain vigilant regarding potential biases and inaccuracies in AI-generated content.
