July 28 to August 1, 2025 | 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Daily
at Greenville Senior High Academy, 1 Vardry Street, Greenville, SC 29601
and led by Mark Brosseau, MFA, Art Teacher at GSHA
The Greenville County Schools Drawing Marathon is a way for upper level high school art students to build a foundation for their upcoming art classes. Modeled loosely after the New York Studio School’s Drawing Marathon, students will participate in five consecutive full days of drawing. The emphasis will be on working from direct observation using a variety of sources, and increasing our understanding of pictorial space by analyzing master paintings. Lessons will be reinforced with daily art history discussions. This program is open to all qualified Greenville County School District students and will be provided free of charge.
Each full day is designed to provide an opportunity for daily growth that builds upon the previous days. The long sessions give students the chance to immerse themselves in the exploration of complex pictorial concepts and allow them the space to push beyond their perceived limits.
This will be the typical daily schedule:
Morning - 8:00 to 11:30 AM - Drawing from observation with a focus on still life and working from a clothed model.
Lunch - 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM - Lunch with art historical content and discussion.
Afternoon - 12:30 to 4:00 PM - Drawing the landscape from observation or drawing from master paintings to work on pictorial structure
There is no fee for the program. All art materials and daily lunch will be provided. Transportation is not provided.
The Drawing Marathon is for upper level high school art students who are engaged and motivated. The program will be capped at fifteen students with preference given to those entering AP Studio Art classes.
