Curriculum Overview

Here at BRHS we utilize a blended curriculum in which all four JROTC year groups are scheduled during each of our three course periods. This allows greater scheduling flexibility for our students that may have a packed schedule or engaged in other demanding extracurricular or advanced placement courses that have limited offerings. Because we are on a 4 x 4 block schedule at BRHS the blended curriculum we teach in the fall is mirrored in the spring.

For each course there are actually five sets of curriculum that will be touched upon during the semester depending upon the year group of the student. Because we have two JROTC instructors we have the ability to provide focused instruction to multiple groups of students simultaneously during one class period. The following is a listing of the JROTC curriculum that will be utilized in the upcoming 2017-18 year.

Leadership Education (LE) –100, Traditions, Wellness, and Foundations of Citizenship (1st Year Cadets)

Leadership Education (LE) – 200, Communication, Awareness and Leadership

A customized course designed to improve communication, enhance awareness of self and others, and provide fundamentals of leadership and followership. The course focuses on the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) mission to “develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community.”

Aerospace Science (AS) - 100, Milestones in Aviation History

An aviation history course focusing on the development of flight throughout the centuries. It starts with ancient civilizations and flight, then progresses through time to future developments in aerospace, with an introduction into cyber technologies.

Aerospace Science (AS) – 400, Management of the Cadet Corps (4th Year Cadets)

At times, senior cadets will manage activities/events/projects for the entire corps during their fourth year in AFJROTC program. This hands-on experience affords cadets the opportunity to put theories of previous leadership courses into practice. Planning, organizing, coordinating, directing, controlling, and decision-making will be done by cadets. They will put into practice their communication, personal-interaction, managerial, and organizational skills.

Wellness/Physical Fitness Program, (All Cadets)

This incorporates the Cadet Health and Wellness Program (CHWP) and requires each cadet to participate in a personal conditioning program focused on individual base line improvements with the goal of achieving a Presidential Physical Fitness standard as calculated by age and gender. The goal of the CHWP is to motivate cadets to lead active, healthy lifestyles beyond program requirements and into their adult lives. PT is a graded activity (20% minor category) and will be conducted on FRIDAY, during class time. Cadets will be expected to bring and wear proper sports shoes and their issued JROTC shorts, Air Force t-shirt, and sweatshirt. Cadets will also be expected to participate, to the best of their ability, in all events. Cadets who do not wear the provided clothing and/or refuse to participate correctly will receive a 0 (zero) daily grade. Missing items will count off 10 points each. One parent note is accepted to excuse participation, after that a doctor’s note is required, unless there is a pre-existing condition listed on either of the medical forms submitted.
