Welcome to the Global Studies web page, your source for class updates and information.

In our class, we will survey global culture and examine the way in which people interact with each other and their environment. We'll delve deeper and explore what circumstances underlie the often complex issues that cause conflict and hopefully, resolution. We will also place a heavy emphasis on the plight of school age children from other countries, as such investigations are relevant to the age group of my classes.

In a nutshell, we will encounter places and people, use any legitimate resource available to examine these places and people, and learn the ways in which they live - their everyday lives and concerns, how they are different yet similar.

Medusa snarling and angry. Little does she know that Perseus is lurking somewhere in class preparing to slay her.

To learn about South America, we incorporated technology and webpage creation. Students became travel agents and created persuasive presentations to attract potential visitors to a South American country of their choice.

This was our first day discussing Asia. All classes participated in learning a few basic steps of Tai Chi, originally developed by a Taoist Monk in China. Its practitioners claim it calms the mind and helps to develop focus.

Although we focus on present global conditions, it's helpful for students to examine the past before we survey the present. In this case, we discussed ancient Egypt as a baseline to examine the differences between an ancient civilization and a modern world. As an item of curiosity, we mummified apples. After three weeks of waiting, students discovered the outcome: Fruit leather! By the way, it's not consumable (yuck)!

Our Europe unit focused on many elements of culture. Some students decided to research culinary treats. The two students to the left researched the history of the cannoli and how it has changed over time and most importantly, hand made them and brought enough for the class to enjoy.
