My name is Ben Horne, and I am thrilled to be teaching PLTW Engineering at Riverside High School. This is my 8th year at RHS and my 9th year teaching for Greenville County Schools. I also have nearly ten years of teaching experience at the college level, having taught classes at both Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Co and The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. I earned my M.A. in philosophy at Colorado State, with specialties in environmental ethics and animal ethics. I earned my B.S. in biology from Bryan College in Dayton, TN in 2002.
Along my path to RHS, I have held a wide variety of jobs: hunting exotic pest weeds in swamps in Florida, managing wildlife habitat with prescribed burns, and sampling in crop fields for various beneficial and pest insects. After undergrad, I spent 6 1/2 months hiking 2,174 miles from Mt. Katahdin in Maine to Springer Mountain in Georgia on the Appalachian Trail. That experience may seem quite strange for someone teaching an engineering program. It took me a long time to find my path. My hope is that I can shorten the path to a fulfilling career for my students by giving them wide exposure to many options that are available.
