What is Best Buddies?
Best Buddies is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to creating opportunities for one-to-one friendships, leadership development, inclusive living, and employment for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). At Beck Academy, our chapter focuses on building genuine friendships and creating a school where everyone belongs.
Who can join Best Buddies?
Any Beck Academy student is welcome to join! You do not have to know someone with a disability to become a member. However, you do have to be a student in good standing with no discipline issues.
Do I need experience working with students with disabilities?
No! All you need is a positive attitude, kindness, and a willingness to make new friends.
Is there a membership fee?
Yes, $15 fee.. this covers the cost of your t-shirt for the year!
How are Buddy pairs matched?
We thoughtfully pair students based on personalities, shared interests, schedules, and compatibility to help create meaningful friendships. While we would love for everyone to get matches, we only have a limited number of buddies.
Can I still come to events if I don't get a buddy match?
Absolutely! Every member is invited to all meetings and chapter events. Best Buddies is about building an inclusive community. Also, some people prefer to be a part of the group and not have a buddy match.
What if I don't know anyone in Best Buddies?
That's perfectly okay! Many students join without knowing anyone and quickly make new friends.
Can I be friends with more than one Buddy?
Absolutely! While some members have an official Buddy match, everyone is encouraged to build friendships throughout the chapter.
Can parents volunteer?
Yes! Parent volunteers are always appreciated for special events, fundraisers, and the Friendship Walk.
Why do you raise money?
Fundraising helps support chapter activities, leadership opportunities, conference attendance, and Best Buddies programs around the world, but especially in our State.
What is the Friendship Walk?
The Friendship Walk is Best Buddies' largest national fundraiser and celebration of inclusion. Our Beck community participates each year to raise awareness and support for the mission.
What makes Beck's chapter unique?
Beck Academy has one of the largest and most active middle school Best Buddies chapters in the Nation. More than one third of our student body participates, creating a culture where inclusion is part of everyday school life.
Still have questions? We'd love to hear from you!
What should I expect at my first meeting?
You'll meet new people, participate in fun activities, and leave with a few new friends.
