What is a school Counselor?

Elementary school counselors are professional educators with a mental health perspective who understand and respond to challenges presented by today's diverse student population. School counselors work with students, parents, and school staff to assist students in becoming successful learners.

As a school counselor, I know that anyone may have a concern at some point. While some problems may go away, others will not. I will try to help you you understand and learn to cope with situations you cannot change. I will also try to help you develop strategies to change the situations you can impact.

School counselors help students:

• Explore their abilities, strengths, interests, and talents

• Develop healthy relationships

• Respect and appreciate others

• Resolve conflicts and set goals

• Establish effective study habits and test-taking skills

• Move to the next educational level (middle school or high school)


School counselors help parents:

• Focus on ways to further the academic, social, and emotional growth of theireir children

• Resolve crisis issues involving their children

• Develop strategies to help their children with issues like social adjustments, family situations, or behavioral concerns

• Make the transition to the next educational level (middle school or high school) with their children

School counselors help staff members:

• Explore the potential of each student

• Develop strategies to help students be successful at school

• Interpret test scores and other academic data with parents
