Grading Scale

A: 90-100 B: 80-89 C: 70-79 D: 60-69 F: 59 or below

Grades will be determined as follows: major tests weighted at 60%, quizzes and minor grades weighted at 30%, and homework weighted at 10%. Major tests can include cumulative tests over several topics or chapters, as well as, projects. Quizzes can include announced and unannounced quizzes over material covered in class and assigned for homework. Homework will be graded for effort and occasionally for accuracy.

Final Grade for Course

The final grade for this course will be determined as follows:

1st Semester’s Grade: 40%

2nd Semester’s Grade: 40%

Final Exam (EOC): 20% (An End of Course Exam (EOC) will be used as the final in this course.)

Make Up Work

Major tests must be made up within one week of the original test date with an excused absence. Arrangements must be made with the teacher for a suitable time to make up Major tests. Late Projects will incur a 5 point penalty for every day past the due date. Quizzes will not be made up, the major test grade from that topic or unit will substitute for the missed quiz grades. Late homework is ONLY accepted when a student is absent.

Attendance Policy

Absences in High School are accrued per course. Any absence in excess of 10 may cause the student to lose credit for a 180-day/year long course. Absences that are medical (doctor notes), bereavement, and/or Principal Approved are not included in the maximum absences. Greer High students must be present a minimum of 45 minutes to be counted present. (Refer to Student Handbook.)

Tardiness

If a student is less than 5 minutes late to class without an excuse, this is a TARDY. If a student is more than 5 minutes late to class without an excuse, this is considered CUTTING CLASS. (Refer to Student Handbook.)

1st - 3rd offense - warning/parent notification

4th offense - referral

Subsequent offenses - referral

Classroom Expectations

Be Respectful.

Obey ALL school policies and rules laid out in the student handbook.

Allow others to learn. Talking is permitted only when deemed necessary by the teacher.

Remain in your seat until I dismiss you. The teacher dismisses the class, not the bell.

Respect the property and rights of other students and the teacher.

Follow all cell phone and Chromebook policies. Cell phones are only allowed at certain times and only by permission of the teacher.

Be Responsible.

Come to class prepared with all materials and assignments.

DO NOT USE ELECTRONICS or PHONES DURING TESTS and QUIZZES

Take your seat when the bell rings, class starts with the ringing of the tardy bell.

Be Resourceful.

Exhibit a positive attitude. Be involved and participate.

Come to class with a willingness to learn (growth mindset).

If you need help, ask for it! We will be working together in pairs, in small groups and tutoring is available.

Student consequences for Behavior issues:

Verbal warning and/or seat change

Parent contact and lunch detention ( 15 minutes)

Discipline referral to administration which may result in ISS or Suspension

**Failure to report for detention will result in a discipline referral.

Hall and Restroom Passes

Students learn more while they are in the classroom than in the hallways. Each student will be given a Pass to leave the classroom 5 times per quarter. The pass must be used any time the student wishes to go to the Restroom, locker, water fountain, or any other personal agenda. Students must always have a written pass signed by a teacher to be in the hallways during class times. Students that do not use all of their passes during the quarter may turn in their pass for extra credit points on major tests or projects. Medical conditions and notes from parents are acceptable to override the limit on the number of times a student may leave the classroom. If you have any questions regarding this policy, please email or call me.

Please sign and return

Welcome to Algebra I CP! I look forward to teaching your student this semester.

Class Description:

PREREQUISITE: 8th Grade Math

In Algebra 1 students develop fluency creating, interpreting, and translating between various forms of linear, quadratic, and exponential equations and functions. They will interpret functions graphically, numerically, symbolically, and verbally and use them to model real-world phenomenon. The SCCCR mathematical process standards apply throughout the course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful and logical subject.

The students who are successful in this course will be prepared for the state-mandated end-of-course assessment (Algebra 1 EOCEP) administered at the completion of Algebra 1.

Class Routine:

Each day will begin with a starter. While you are working on the starter, attendance will be taken. We will then spend a short amount of time going over the starter. The rest of class will be devoted to learning new material. We must move at a steady pace in order to complete all of the objectives prior to the Algebra 1 EOC. If you find that you are having trouble and need extra help, please set up an appointment to come before school for tutoring. I am more than happy to help you; it is my goal to have you succeed in this course.

Materials Needed:

You will need a large 3-ring notebook, notebook paper, pencils, and a graphing calculator (TI-83, TI-83 plus, or TI-84 calculator*). I have graphing calculators for students to use, but they are not to be taken home to complete homework assignments.

Grading and Assessment Procedures:

The End of Course will count as 20% of the overall course grade. Tests are announced ahead of time. Quizzes will be both announced and unannounced. Homework is assigned to reinforce concepts learned in class and is assigned daily and will be given a collective grade for the week.

  • In the event you miss any test or quiz, it is your responsibility to make it up before or after school.
  • Students will receive a weekly classwork grade. Failure to participate and complete classwork will result in a reduction of 20 points/day from the weekly grade.
  • Homework will be assigned regularly. As with classwork one grade will be given each week based on the number of assignments completed for the week. Each missing homework assignment will result in a reduction of 20 points.
  • Students should check google classroom daily for information from me.
  • Cheating on any assignments or assisting someone to cheat will result in both participants in getting a 0. The assignment will not be allowed to be redone or replaced with another assignment.
  • Each quarter one test may be retaken to bring up a students grade. To retake any test a parent signature and a completed review must be provided. Then we can make arrangements to retake the test before or after school.

Grading Scale: A: 90-100 B: 80-89 C: 70-79 D: 60-69 F: 59 or below

End-of-Course Examination Program (EOCEP)

The exam date is to be determined.

EOCEP examination scores count 20 percent in the calculation of the student’s final grade in gateway courses. Defined gateway courses currently include the following courses or courses with other names and activity codes in which the same academic standards are taught: Algebra 1, Intermediate Algebra, Biology 1, English 1, and United States History and the Constitution.

Coach Ravenell - Algebra 1 2020-2021

Please read the syllabus on Coach Ravenell Website online or on google classroom that your child joined. Sign the following with your child stating you’ve both read the syllabus and understand what is expected in my classroom.

I have read the syllabus for Coach Ravenell’s class. I understand what is expected of me as a student and my parents understand as well. I understand that this class has an accumulative final exam that will count as 20% of my overall grade. It is my responsibility as the student to get work when I have an absence. I know that late homework and classwork are not accepted unless it is due to absence. I understand that Coach Ravenell expects me to be on time, prepared, and respectful while in her class as I am there to learn. I understand the consequences of not following these rules. I understand that my parents can log onto Powerschool to see my grades. If they do not have a login, they may get one from guidance. There is tutoring available but arrangements need to be made in advance.
