The Augusta Circle Circus

By William Hoffman

We all know about the Augusta Circle Circus. But, how much do you really know about it? Today, I will find out for you. I asked Mrs. Holman these questions about the circus.

We all like the blow ups and all want to play or ride them. Luckily the school gets about 5 each year. The Circus takes a lot of planning and there is a large staff who runs it. PTA plans it and parents run the stations. There are a lot of fun things to do at the Circus. The Titanic Slide is the most popular ride. The Silly String Pit is also very popular. In fact, it was so popular, they ran out of Silly String cans this year before the end of the Circus.

What are some rules?

#1 Play safe.

#2 Listen to the person in charge.

#3 Have fun.

Mrs. Holman said this is an important fundraiser where we can all have fun. Finally, we have to talk about the food! There is Papa John's Pizza, Cotton Candy, Popcorn, and then TCBY Frozen Yogurt! Yum!

The Circus was Friday, April 26, the weather was beautiful and we all had fun!

Well, now you know more about the Augusta Circle Circus.

Battle of the Books (BOB)

By Louise Lowe

Have you ever wanted to get a good book, sit back and relax? Well I know I have. If you just LOVE to do this then Battle of the Books is a great way to do so.

Here is how Battle of the Books works. Someone such as a librarian or any staff member will have 10 books to share with the kids that choose to participate. Once students have read all chosen books they start to practice one day a week with the other students and the BOB Coach. If there are more than 5 people on a team, the BOB Coach will find a way to make it so only 5 people are on a team. They could do tests, competitions etc! Once there is just five people on a team they will have one more practice before the real competition! Friends and family are welcome to come and cheer the ACE BOB team on!

Our ACE battle of the books team sadly lost in the first round against Sterling School. :( But hopefully they will have better luck next year! Battle of the Books is a great way for kids to have fun and talk about the books. If you're in 3rd grade, I recommend you try it next year. And if your in 4th grade try it again before it’s too late! I promise you’ll have lots of fun the second you join!!!!

Barrier Island

By Sophie Gwaltney

Every year the 5th graders go on an awesome trip, and it’s to Barrier Island. This island is near Charleston. It’s a long way, so the students take a charter bus. Last year my sister, Maggie, went and her favorite part of the trip was going to the beach with all her friends.

There is one problem with the beach at Barrier Island, though. It has a mud pit. P.U! That smell must be the mud. The 5th graders go in the mud pit and it is not the best smell. To get to the mud pit you have to go through a path and when you smell something bad, it is probably the mud pit. Even though the smell is terrible, the kids still have a lot of fun in the pit. However, most of them have to throw out their clothes when they are finished because they stink so badly.

Besides the mud pit, there are a lot of other fun things to do on Barrier Island. The students stay in cabins with their friends and a couple of other groups. At night they go crab hunting with nets and hands on the beach. They do dances and fun activities with their counselors. All the while, the students are learning about an important ecosystem.

The students have so much fun, but they can only stay for 3 days. I can’t wait to go next year!

ACE Newspaper

By Dewey Henderson

The ACE newspaper is an enjoyable 4th grade activity. Those upcoming third graders will have a chance to do this next year. Here are some opinions about newspaper, Ford Netzler: “ It’s enjoyable!” Rachel Owens: “ It’s the best.” Mrs.Conway: “I have enjoyed this group so much. I love the fourth graders' talent and dedication.”

So how do they do it?

ACE Newspaper is created with 1-4 people writing each article. The students start by writing it on paper. Second, they type it on a chromebook. Next, when they finish, they send it to Mrs. Conway. Then, she will make corrections and publish it.

How do you get in?

It's easy to get in. Here's how. At the beginning of the year Mrs. Conway will give the fourth graders a piece of paper that you can explain why you should be in ACE Newspaper. Then she will see your sheet and maybe approve you to be someone who works for the newspaper.

What can you write about?

Almost anything including, interviews, upcoming events, past events, and so much more!!! My favorite is interviews and talking about what people or groups do.

This is an upcoming club for third graders next year! It is so much fun!

Tasty Tuesday

Yum! Yum! Food! “Hi! I am Anna Apple and I’m here to tell you about Tasty Tuesday and how to choose some healthy foods instead of Whoa Foods.” Here are some tips:

  1. Eat at least 2 servings of fruit a day.
  2. Eat at least 3 servings of veggies a day.
  3. Eat 1 sweet a day, or less :)

If you follow these rules, you will most likely will stay in good shape for the rest of your life.

Workout Wednesday

This is why you should Workout Wednesday or any day!!!

And then you can do yoga! Oh! And don’t forget to breathe!!!

Gaga Ball

By Preston Godfrey, Davis Fairey and Sanders Padgett

This year Augusta Circle got a Gaga Ball Pit as part of its playground equipment. We got this because last year’s third graders requested one! We’ve had it for a few months now and some of the kids got pretty good at it!

The Gaga Ball Pit is a fenced circular area where students play a dodgeball type of game. It’s a lot of fun.

Here are the standings for good sportsmanship, most eliminations, and most wins!

  1. First grade - EVERYBODY
  2. Second grade - Rollins Stalvey
  3. Third grade - Charlie Rowan
  4. Fourth grade - Porter Blum
  5. Fifth grade - Morgan Whiteside
  6. Kindergarten - Marshall Hudson

The rules of gaga ball are very important and some people are getting mixed up on some of them, so here are the tricky rules people get mixed up.

  1. YOU ARE OUT IF ONE OF THE FOLLOWING THINGS HAPPEN: IF YOU ARE HIT BY THE BALL BELOW THE WAIST OR IF YOU FALL AND HIT THE BALL (THAT IS CALLED TURTLING).

2. DOUBLE TOUCH WHEN THERE ARE ONLY 3 PLAYERS LEFT and TRIPLE TOUCH WHEN 2 LEFT!

Once we got our Gaga Ball Pit more than ⅔ of the school played, so we think we made a good decision on getting this fun equipment. In fact, once we got The Pit, Blythe Academy really wanted one, so they built their own!

Also, congratulations to Morgan Whiteside, in fifth grade, for winning the first game of Gaga Ball.

We all have loved the gaga ball pit and will for many years!

Cultural Arts Week

By Cason McCall and Anna Parks

Cultural Arts Week is our favorite week of the year! We are so excited for Austria to be this year's big adventure. We are also very excited to share cultural arts week with the new kindergartners of our school.

Here is how cultural arts week works. First, the PTA Moms come up with a country. This year they picked Austria. Next, people from Austria come over and share food, drinks, sports and many other things we would have never had on a daily basis.

One of the things that we love about cultural arts week is that you get to try new things and learn about how other countries work. For example, last year was India and we got to try a new drink which had vinegar in it. We would have never thought to try it before we learned about it.

Hopefully, you learned about Cultural Arts week. We are certain you will love learning about Austria just like we have loved learning about other countries throughout our time here at ACE.

The Second Grade State Geography Bee

By Ford Netzler

This year the second graders are studying communities and learning about regions and geography. Mrs. Conway has challenged all second graders to know all the states and their capitals. She is hosting the Second Grade State Geography Bee.

The Geography Bee takes place every year towards the end of the school year. The students have the second half of the school year to practice. In the first round, students will be asked to name a state. If students get past the first round, then they go to the next round where they need to know the states and their capitals.

Students who make it through both rounds will get a special trophy, but I can’t tell you what it is - it’s a mystery! But to wrap this all up, I will give you a joke for a hint to what the trophy is....

What is Camilla Cabelos favorite fruit? Banana-ooh-na-na !!!!!!!!!

OH! And you third, fourth and fifth graders who have done this Bee before, don’t say a THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A.C.E Chorus!

By: Hampton and Hayes

Today we are in luck because we are going to ask the Chorus members some questions about what they do!

The first question we asked: “What do you like about Chorus?” They said, “Candy at the end.” The second question we asked was, “How do join Chorus?” They said, “You have to sing “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” (by yourself or with a partner). The third question we asked is, “How does Chorus work?” They said, ”Practice every Tuesday, and practice for concerts.” The fourth question is, “What songs did you sing at Carowinds?” They said “Over the Rainbow” and “Purple People Eater”.

WOW! Chorus sounds like a ton of fun. Maybe some third graders will get the chance next year to join!
