Course Description:
Physical Education I is regarded as a vital part of general education and an integral part of the school’s total educational program. It encompasses certain developmental goals, which include physical, social, mental, and emotional aspects of child growth and maturity. This is a one-unit course in fitness involving Fitnessgram testing, circuit training, and sports skills. Students will learn offensive and defensive strategy, scoring, and skills.
This course will represent a wide range of topics related to health, physical fitness, and how to establish a high-quality lifestyle. Physical Education I is also in compliance with the Ronda Rouse Law and will provide instruction with CPR and the use of an AED. Students will learn to assess their health and fitness level and design their fitness program. Additionally, this course will provide knowledge and skills used in exhibiting proficiency in the two movement forms of at least two of the sports indicated. This course will help students satisfy the requirements for Performance Indicators 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the South Carolina Physical Education curriculum requirements. Mastery of information will provide students with the concepts needed to maintain a desired state of fitness throughout their lifetime.
Curriculum Content Standards in Physical Education:
Students who complete Physical Education I with a passing grade of 60 or higher will have demonstrated the abilities, concepts, knowledge, and skills required to accomplish the following course standards.

Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in many movement forms and proficiency in a few movement forms.
Standard 2: Applies movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills.
Standard 3: Exhibits a physically active lifestyle.
Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
Standard 5: Demonstrates responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings.
Standard 6: Demonstrates understanding and respect for differences among people in physical activity settings.
Standard 7: Understands that physical activity provides the opportunity for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction.
