School Counselors design and implement instruction aligned to The American School Counseling Association 35 Mindsets and Behaviors Learning Standards, cross-walked with New York State Education Department Social and Emotional Learning Standards for large-group, classroom, small-group, and individual settings. Classroom instruction, known as School Counseling Curriculum Lessons (SCCLs), is taught in coordination with classroom teachers and are relevant, developmentally appropriate, and engaging lessons regarding academic, social and emotional, and career development topics. The program also includes instruction that addresses the NY State mandate called "Erin's Law" (taking effect July 1st, 2020). It requires all public schools to implement a prevention-oriented child sexual abuse program at the elementary level in a developmentally appropriate way.
The school counselor provides appraisal and advisement in large-group, classroom, small-group, and individual settings. An appraisal is a process where school counselors work with students to analyze and assess their abilities, interests, skills, and achievement. Using minute meetings, interest inventories, and motivational interviewing can help students understand their abilities, values, and career interests. Providing support for students also includes facilitating individual and small-group counseling during times of transition, heightened stress, critical change, or other situations impeding student success. School Counselors offer brief, short-term individual counseling sessions to help students use effective problem-solving strategies and express their feelings and concerns.
