Digital Learning Updates
Hello Families!
Welcome to our digital learning information! Here you will find a variety of activities to do with your child along with important information and updates related to your child's education. I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy! Please tell your child that I miss them and hope to see them soon!
Please feel free to accommodate as you see needed and work at the pace that your child is demonstrating success. It is more important for the children to continue to be exposed to and practice the basic fundamental skills for their grade level than to complete a specific amount of work pages in a day! Your child may also have activities provided from his or her homeroom teacher that you can use as you feel is appropriate for your child! Please know that any practice would be highly beneficial!
The best advice that I can give to you is to continue practicing the skills sent home with your child and to READ! Reading at least once daily with your child makes a huge difference in their early literacy skill development! READ READ READ!
I am also available to communicate and support you and your child in any possible way! We are in this together. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns and I will be in contact very soon! As a team, we will help lead your child down a path to success. Below are the best ways to communicate with me:

call and leave a voicemail at 724-588-2500 extension 1319 and I will return your call
reach out to your child's homeroom teacher who can contact me as well
NEW! Join my Remind App class (this is separate from your child's homeroom group): Text @kea8h69 to the number 81010
Please never hesitate to reach out to me! Below are some additional resources and ideas for you to use and reference at any time! Thank you again for your support and dedication to your child's education!
Additional Instructional Ideas for Kindergarten Students:
Have students watch this video and repeat letter-keyword-sound cards
Have students watch this video and repeat FUNdations vowel extensions
Have students watch this video on digraphs and repeat the cards - this is a very new concept for them!
Have students practice writing their first and last name with and without a visual to reference. Remember that uppercase letters only go at the beginning of each name.
Practice proper letter formation (starting from the top): Uppercase and lowercase letters
Letter formation begins after letter and sound practice at approximately 3:00 into the video
Practice sound dictation: Write the letter that says ...
Practice beginning or ending sounds: Write the beginning sound in ..."table"...etc.
Practice word writing dictation: use dry erase boards, sidewalk chalk, sand, shaving cream!
Give your child a word: "Tap it out" with them...They write the three sounds they hear in the word. Then tap and blend the sounds to check the word. Example: Let's tap out the word "cat".../c/../a/../t/ Now write those sounds.
Give your child three individual sounds to write on the board. Once the three letters are written, tap out the sounds together and ask your child the word. Example: Write the letter that says /b/...write the letter that says /a/...write the letter that says /t/...Then tap out the sounds to form the word "bat"
Possible Words: cat, sit, hit, mug, run, sun, fog, etc.
You can also do activities like this: write the word "cat"...change one sound to make it say "sat"...change one sound to make it say "sit"...change one sound to make it say "sip"...change one sound to make it say "hip"...etc.
Begin to introduce Digraphs (2 letters that make 1 sound)...use the videos above..."ck" only comes at the end of a word!
Have students practice writing the digraph when you make a given sound.../sh/, /ch/, /th/, /wh/, /ck/
Begin to have students write words with digraphs: ship, shop, chat, chip, thin, math, lick, back, when
Word Families: Brainstorm a list (written or oral) of word family words. For example, words in the -am family would be ham, ram, Sam, Pam, etc. Possible Word Families: -it, -at, -an, -am, -et, -im, -un, -og,
Phonemic Awareness Activities:
Rhyming: Give two words and ask if they rhyme or give your child a word and have he or she produce a word that rhymes
Search "Rhyme and Freeze" on Youtube
Beginning sounds: Ask your child the beginning or ending sound for a given word or give your child a sound and ask he or she to produce a word with that beginning sound
Segmenting and Blending sounds: Tapping out words orally (You can also have then practice reading CVC words)
Orally, tell your child three sounds, have your child tell you the word (/c/.../a/.../t/...they must say the word is "cat")
Orally, tell your child a word, and he or she will tell you the sounds in the word (tell me the sounds in "cat"...they must say /c/ /a/ /t/)
Writing: Aside from writing words, it can be fun to have your child draw a picture and either verbally tell you about the story or begin to write words under the story that tell about it!
Have students practice sight words! Reading and writing/spelling them is beneficial! Below is a list of of some kindergarten sight words you could practice. Create flashcards, practice spelling them, find them in books! Also, feel free to practice by searching for "Jack Hartmann sight word videos" on Youtube!
Reading: Read with your child. Have your child help you by tapping out the words they can. Also, write some CVC words on a dry erase board and have your child practice reading the words by tapping out the sounds.
Math: We left off with learning teen numbers.
Practice all teen numbers...writing them, counting objects, drawing objects for a given number
Oral Counting: Practice orally counting to 50 or beyond
Numbers: Writing numbers from 0-20...feel free to continue from 20 to 100 if you need more activities to practice!
One-to-one correspondence: Have students practice counting groups of objects and writing or orally telling how many objects are in the group (0-20). You can also use tactile objects such as pencils, pennies, etc.
Writing Numbers to 100: Give your child a blank hundred chart or a piece of paper, and have your child practice writing all numbers from 0 to 100.
Comparing Numbers: Write two numbers and have students tell which is smaller or larger (0-20). Use pictures to help!
Missing Number or Next Number:
Orally, count and stop...ask your child for the next number.
Write something like this: 11, 12, ___. Your child will write the next number.
Orally, count and stop....ask your child to write the next number!
We also learned about addition and subtraction of numbers to 10. Feel free to review these skills using pictures or tactile objects!
Begin to introduce 2D and 3D shapes. Students could identify shapes including a circle, square, rectangle, triangle, hexagon, oval, pyramid, sphere, cylinder, cone, prism. Have students tell you about the shapes (corners, sides, etc.), compare two shapes, or even try to find the shapes within your house or backyard! Go on a shape scavenger hunt!
Additional Instructional Ideas for First Grade Students:
Have students watch the video on digraphs to review sounds
Have students watch this video and repeat FUNdations welded sounds
Have students watch this video and read the welded sound words
Have students watch this video on "silent e"- remind students that the silent e at the end tells the vowel to say its name
Have students practice reading and writing words with a silent e and long vowel sound!
Have students practice word dictation skills: Give your child a CVC word, a word with a digraph, welded sound, blend (like st, sl,fl), or silent e: Students can write these words on dry erase boards or paper (or even sidewalk chalk to make it fun!)
Example words: cat, sit, chat, shop, lick, song, sing, bank, flag, step, much, brick, nest, gate, make, etc.
You can also do activities like this: write the word "cat"...change one sound to make it say "sat"...change one sound to make it say "sit"...change one sound to make it say "sip"...change one sound to make it say "ship",,,etc.
Have students practice sight words! Reading and writing/spelling them is beneficial! Below is a list of all first grade sight words you could practice. Create flashcards, practice spelling them, find them in books! Also, feel free to practice using the sight word pages sent home with your child or search for "Jack Hartmann sight word videos" on Youtube!
Practice Writing! Have students tell you a story and write 1-3 sentences about their story, or have your child draw a picture and write a sentence about the picture! They should try to "tap out their words" unless they are a sight word!
You can also practice sentence dictation: Give your child a simple sentence and they write it on dry erase or paper
Examples: The cat ran to the mall. She went for a run. He is in the sun. The kids will have fun.
Another fun idea: Write a sentence with one word on each note card: Have your child build the sentence that makes sense!
Note: We have been working on the following skills in our writing: capital letter at the beginning, period at the end, space between our words, tapping out our words, writing neatly on the lines, does our sentence make sense!
Reading! It is so important for your child to read every single day! I have posted websites below where your child can listen to a story. Feel free to read a story with them. When you are reading, ask questions about the story to keep them engaged! Also, find stories your child can read to you...have them practice tapping out the words, being a word detective to look for certain sight words, or retell the story to you!
Possible questions to ask your child: Who are the characters(people or animals)? Where did the story take place? How did the character feel? What was the problem in the story? What happened at the beginning of the story? the middle? the end? Retell me what happened in the story...use the pictures to help!
Math: We have been practicing addition and subtraction. Use a hundred chart or number line to practice any single digit addition and subtraction problems. Write the problems on dry erase boards, use shaving cream, side walk chalk, etc.!
Possible problems: 6+9, 3+6, 8-3, 10-4, 9+7, 17-4, 18-2, etc. It helps them if they circle the add/subtract sign as a reminder!
Also, practice writing numbers and counting to 100 and beyond! We also worked on place value (using base 10 blocks to make a certain number).
Begin to introduce double digit addition and subtraction without regrouping or borrowing. We write these problems vertically, circle the addition/subtraction sign, and draw a line down the middle to separate the columns! This is a very new skill, so they may need some support!
Possible problems: 21+14, 44+23, 88-51, 67-13, 34+22, 74-11, etc.
Writing Numbers: Give your child a blank hundred chart, and have your child fill in the numbers by writing them from 0-100. Then, challenge your child to continue writing numbers greater than 100!
