Federal Transit Incentives

For mass transit and vehicles transporting more than six people, employees qualify under several IRS-approved situations that determine when benefits are to be excluded from gross income and wages. These situations include whether an employee incurs charges for delivery of transit passes, or whether transit passes are to be delivered through a bona fide reimbursement arrangement.

Either cash compensation or qualified transportation benefits can be provided to employees on a pre-tax basis. The amount of compensation reduction cannot exceed monthly limits for transportation benefits.
