GHS German Students Travel to Chicago

by Karlee Weber, 4th Year German Student

On December 5th, Greenfield High School students in German levels 4 and 5 took a field trip to Chicago. First we went to the Goethe Institut, where we were greeted by two German interns, one from Germany. They gave an interactive presentation about German culture in the German language. Afterwards we were tested on our knowledge of Germany and German culture through a competitive game of team Kahoot. Next we explored the “Math to Touch” exhibit. This exhibit was a display of math experiments from the "Mathematikum" which is the first interactive mathematics museum in the world located in Giessen, Germany. We got to try out some of the math experiments by solving puzzles, building bridges, unraveling riddles and watching spheres race.

Following the Goethe Institut we traveled to the Christkindlmarket, modeled after the Christkindlmarkt in Nürnberg. The market is only open during the holiday season. Vendors from Germany and some from other countries came to sell authentic gift and food items. Many of the students’ favorite booth was the Sweet Castle featuring delicious German candies, chocolates, gingerbread, roasted almonds, and cookies.
