SUMMER LEARNING • 2026-27 School Year
It's time for summer learning!
Welcome to summer, GSFS Middle School students! Spend this summer exploring, trying new things, spending time with friends and family, diving into new or old hobbies and passions, and most of all, keep learning all you can! With that in mind, your GSFS Middle School teachers have put together some suggestions to keep your minds sharp and spark your curiosities and wonderings. Please click on your grade level links below!
Become fluent with your math facts!
Use this list of methods. Try several ways and notice what works best for your own learning. Please see our note in the resources if you have dyscalculia (a learning disorder in math).
Practice until you are speedy with your multiplication and division facts (2 seconds or less)
You will have a chance to show (and celebrate) your progress in the fall.
If you are already fluent, explore fun math (below)!
Recommended Summer Math Practice Using IXL
There is a helpful feature in IXL called the "diagnostic arena." Students can do a short adaptive assessment within IXL, and then IXL will select focus skills specifically tailored to their needs. It's a great way to generate a set of skills for a math “tune up!” Here’s how to do it:
Students sign into their IXL accounts (email Jane for logins if needed).
Click on "Assessment" in the top menu,
Click then "Step Into the Arena."
Select math in the drop down menu in the top right corner.
The diagnostic test takes about 30 minutes the first time, then less time for refreshing after that.
After the diagnostic, IXL will populate the student's Assessment page with a graph showing skills and scores.
IXL will automatically assign skills based on the adaptive test for individualized practice.
For many skills, a short teaching video is available, too.
For students who like and do well with IXL math practice, this is a great option. It can also be useful for standardized test prep.
Optional Fun Math Activities
Explore any of these challenging and fun math puzzles, games, projects and resources. There are many interesting options. You will have a chance to share with your math teacher about what you did in the fall.
Use this link, Science Buddies Topic Selection Wizard, to generate Science Showcase ideas!
Each 6th grade student should take the survey, look through the ideas generated by the Topic Selection Wizard, and write down 3 possible project ideas they would be interested in choosing.
Students are not committing to these ideas but generating some ideas that might interest them for Science Showcase 2027.
Dive into science by reading any of these books!
You will have a chance to talk with your science teacher in the fall about any books you read.
