Dirty Hands, Clean Science
Students in Mrs. Dexter's Biology class explored the concept of germ theory and its significance in public health. They gained an understanding of how germs spread and the importance of maintaining good hygiene practices to prevent illnesses from spreading during their hands-on lab.
During the experiment, students applied Glo Germ Gel to their hands, mimicking the presence of germs, and then examined their hands under UV light to visualize the spread of "germs." They washed their hands using soap and water as they normally would and observed the effectiveness of their handwashing technique by comparing before and after results under the UV light.
Post-lab questions prompted students to reflect on their findings and observations.
Overall, this lab provided students with a hands-on opportunity to understand the significance of good hygiene practices in preventing the spread of illnesses and encouraged critical thinking about effective strategies for germ removal and disease prevention.
