How will the process for extra-credit and final grades work for Middle Schools and High Schools - NEW UPDATED 4-14-2020

1. The student's final grades will be calculated by averaging Q1, Q2, and Q3. S1 will stay the same and S2 will be the same as Q3 if needed for semester courses. A student's Q3 grade can only go up from where it was prior to the closure, it may not go down.

2. Students must be provided the opportunity for the new learning activity to count as extra credit each week. Each required weekly learning activity must count for no less than a 2% increase on the Q3 grade. Teachers may offer more extra credit for the optional learning activities, but at a minimum students must have the opportunity to earn a 2% point bump each week. This would be a minimum of the opportunity to earn 12% points for the remainder of the year to be applied to Q3.

Example:

The student had a 85% in Q1, 87% in Q2, and 76% for Q3 as of March 13th. If they do none of the continuity of learning activities, they would have a 82.67% for the year. If they did 5 of the 6 learning activities their grade for Q3 would become an 86% (5 activities x 2 points). This would make their final grade a 86% for the year (Average of 85%, 87%, and 86%). Reminder, students can go also improve their grade by completing make up work from Q3 with no penalty.

Will students move up to the next grade level?

In most cases, students will move up to the next grade level. If grade retention is being considered for a student in the elementary or middle school level, it would have already been discussed with the parent prior to the March 13th closure. School Administration will initiate a phone call to any parent of a child that this may still be the case. For high school students, grade level is still determined by the number of credits a student has earned. It is imperative that students engage with these learning activities through the extended closure.

Will my child have to make up work next year? - Updated 4/2/2020

Students who are not able to complete the assignments virtually or in paper form, may be asked to complete assignments at a later time to be determined. This could be when school resumes in the Fall of 2020, Summer School of 2020, or throughout the 2020 - 2021 school year.

graduation 2020

My child is a senior in the class of 2020. Will they still be able to graduate? - Updated 4/2/2020

All students that were on track to graduate on time as of March 13th will still graduate on time. Please reference GCPS Coronavirus Phase 3 Information for details regarding this process. If your child is in danger of not graduating on time you will receive a personal phone call from an administrator at WMHS to discuss requirements for graduation.

Updated 4/2/2020 : We do still encourage all Seniors to take advantage of the educational opportunities available to improve their grades in Q3 as well as complete make up work for Q3 to improve their overall grades and transcripts. No Senior will receive a lower grade for the year then their grade as of March 13th. Seniors not passing courses required for graduation, must complete coursework to improve their grade in Q3 and must have a passing grade for the year to receive credit for that course and meet graduation requirements.
