HOW TO GUIDES FOR PARENTS
At Green Bay High School we understand that the idea of blending traditional methods of teaching and learning with tools that are digital and or web based can be daunting for students and parents.
Engaging with the work that is happening inside and outside the classroom both digital and analogue is really important and so the slideshow on this page - and the videos on this page are an introduction for parents and caregivers to the tools that your student is using at Green Bay High School.
Hopefully these videos will give you an insight into how students and teachers are managing their digital lives, and you might feel more comfortable and confident checking in with your student and engaging with their learning.
If you have specific questions or you would like further support please email your students year level Dean and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
Green Bay High School Google Accounts
All staff and students at Green Bay High School have Google Apps for Education accounts which means our @greenbayhigh.school.nz or @gbhs.school.nz email accounts are powered by Google.
Because every staff and student account is a Google account we also get to use Google Drive (for storing documents and other files in the cloud), Google Docs (for creating word processed documents, slideshows, spreadsheets), Google Calendar (for tracking assignments and due dates) and Google Classroom (for organising courses, learning and assessment).
Our staff and students access all of these services through their web browser and all of their work is accessible from any location that has internet access.
At Green Bay High School we use the Google Suite of web apps to connect students and staff, streamline the learning, and manage assessment.
Google Chrome
Google Chrome is Google’s own web browser that is fast, reliable and secure.
Our staff and students are able to ‘sign in’ to Google Chrome to personalise their web experience and sync settings such as bookmarks, passwords, history, extensions, and apps between devices.
Since all of Google’s services are accessible online the Chrome web browser is essential to streamlining that access. Students are encouraged to separate their school and personal accounts by creating separate users in Chrome.
You can do the same at home on a family computer - create separate Chrome users so that every member of the family can connect to their services without confusion.
Google Drive
Google Drive is an online space for storing Google Docs, Slides, Sheets and many other file types. Think of Google Drive as being a hard drive on the web - rather than students only saving work physically to their laptops they can save work in the cloud and have it accessible across their devices and anywhere they can sign in.
All students and teachers have unlimited storage in Google Drive and with proper care and organisation students should be keeping folders and files related to each of their courses as they progress through the school.
A big part of using the Google suite of applications is how easy it is to share information between people. Students can work on group projects together, it can be shared with their teacher and all happening at the same time.
Google Docs
The Google productivity apps are a web based, streamlined version of traditional office applications. Google Docs (Word), Slides (PowerPoint), and Sheets (Excel).
These web applications allow access anywhere and have been created to be user friendly and light on features to maximise efficiency.
Staff and students use Google Docs/Slides/Sheets to produce lesson activities, resources and assignments. They are not the be all and end all of our online activity. And even though lesson progression or topics might be planned for and communicated digitally, it does not mean that the lessons themselves are entirely digital.
Google Docs & Drive Sharing
These streamlined web apps allow our staff and students to create seamless units of work so that students can work at their own pace and pick up where they left off no matter when or where they are.
All of the documents, slideshows and spreadsheets are all stored in Google Drive and saved automatically. No more version tracking or emailing updated documents between home and school.
Google Classroom for Students
Google Classroom is our online learning platform that allows teachers to create online classrooms that students enrol in. Their work is communicated to them in a chronological fashion through announcements, assignments and questions.
Resources such as Google Docs/Slides/Sheets are created and named for students when they have assignments, there are due dates and the ability to submit work when completed.
Every student will be a part of a classroom for each of their subjects and it provides them with the tools to succeed as well as a no fuss, easy to use interface to manage their workload.
Google Classroom for Teachers
Teachers can also integrate other resources such as videos, images, and links to other web apps. Students have the ability to add other files to their submissions such as a video of their experiment or a photo of their product design.
Resources such as Google Docs/Slides/Sheets are created and named for students when they have assignments, there are due dates and the ability to submit work when completed.
Google Classroom for Parents
Parents can also be involved via Guardian Summaries - once you are invited to receive summaries you will get a daily or weekly (your choice) summary of all the missed work, upcoming work and recent activity in the classrooms your student is enrolled in.
You only have to sign up once and you will be hooked in to updates on all of the classrooms your student is enrolled in.
Google Calendar & Gmail
We want our students to be self-managing and this means that they need to be equipped with the tools to do so. Because every staff and student account is a Google account we also get Google Calendar (for tracking assignments and due dates) and Gmail (for communicating specific needs to teachers and school staff).
