The renewable energy conversation is dominated by industry, government and academia, whilst communities, particularly women and youth, are not always adequately included in national discussion on energy policy.
They are also not always aware of the opportunities that exist within the renewable energy sector, and how communities can benefit.
The renewable energy challenge aims to provide an accessible platform for youth voices on renewable energy to be heard.
The Renewable Energy Challenge competition focuses on helping learners imaging how renewable energy can be used to impact their communities. The competition will be broken up in regional heats (teams will compete in their province) and then one national round with the provincial finalists, where exciting prizes are up for grabs for participatory schools and learners.
The competition will help learners contextualise renewable energy for their own communities and create awareness beyond the classroom. The practical application will also aid in identifying learners with key interests in science and technology.
You are encouraged to identify challenges affecting your home, school or community and think about how renewable energy can be used to solve some of these issues.
For example:
electricity shortages at home
load shedding disrupting cooking abilities
street lights or traffic lights with no power
water shortages
heating / cooling problems in class
food going off in your fridge due to load shedding
public facilities and local amenities having power outages
Think of a unique problem that you are experiencing and develop a renewable energy solution to address it.
