Project background
The "Pipeline Development to Deploy Clean Energy Technology Solutions in Municipal Wastewater Treatment Works of South Africa" project aims to promote the integration of renewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency (EE) in municipal wastewater treatment works (WWTWs) to reduce energy consumption and achieve greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions. The project is funded by Green Climate Fund (GCF), implemented and managed by United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and delivered by GreenCape.
The project has three main activity areas, which are:
the strengthening of institutional coordination mechanisms conducive to the promotion of RE and EE interventions in municipal WWTWs and to the facilitation of climate financing
the capacity building of municipalities and relevant country stakeholders to support the planning, programming and implementation of GCF funded activities in the subject area, and
the prioritization, selection and due diligence of a portfolio of bankable RE and EE project proposals for municipal WWTWs.
