Course Description: Study techniques used in organizing data, including frequency distributions, histograms, measures of central tendency, measures of dispersion, probability distributions, point estimation, interval estimation and testing hypotheses.

Grades

  1. There will be at least one test per chapter/unit. I will give you at least a two-class periods notice of the exam. No retake tests will be given.

Makeup: If you are absent (excused), you have 2 class periods to make it up.

Absolutely no exemptions from the final exam.

*As a method of preparing you for the timed AP test you must finish your test in the time allotted.

  1. There will be several quizzes per chapter that are both announced and unannounced. Be ready for a quiz everyday you come to class.

Makeup: If you are absent (excused), you have 2 class periods to make it up.

*As a method of preparing you for the timed AP test you must finish your quiz in the time allotted.

  1. There will be an assignment everyday. It may or may not be collected for a grade at the beginning of the next class period.

Makeup: I do not accept late assignments. If you are absent, the assignment is due when you return and the new assignment will be due the next class period.

d.) You will do extended projects/activities that investigate statistical ideas/concepts in detail.

e.) The grading scale for each semester is as follows:

90-100% A 60-69% D

80-89% B 0-59% F

70-79% C

This is a 5.0 weighted class.

f.) Your grade for the course is based on 3 parts:

Tests: 60%

Quizzes/Projects: 25%

Daily Assignments, 15%

and Participation :

Course Design

This AP Statistics course uses an activity and discussion-based approach in which students construct their understanding of the following four conceptual themes:

∙ Exploring Data

∙ Sampling and Experimental Design

∙ Anticipating Patterns

∙ Statistical Inference

The course is conducive to student engagement in activities and discussions investigating statistical concepts, exploring and analyzing data, assessing models, and performing simulations using appropriate technology such as TI-83/TI-83+/TI-84 graphing calculators, Microsoft Excel, and Fathom Dynamic Data statistical software. Cooperative group problem solving and student writing are learning approaches that will be utilized in the A.P. Statistics classroom where the teacher serves as a facilitator/consultant. All aspects of the course including assignments, exams, activities, and projects are conceptually oriented, and as a result, the teaching will support this focus.

Assessments

Most in-class exams will be comprehensive as a means of preparing for the AP exam. All students will have access to a TI-83/TI-83+/TI-84 graphing calculator for all assignments and assessments. School computers have Fathom Dynamic Data™ statistical software to complete activities and project.

Materials Needed

∙ You will need two 1-subject spiral notebooks with a hard plastic cover to be used for AP Statistics only.

∙ Highlighters – pink, blue, and yellow

∙ TI-83 Plus or TI-84 Plus graphing calculator. The silver editions have more memory and are okay. (If you choose to get a different brand or model, you may not be able to follow in-class experiments/simulations/examples. In other words, just get a TI-83 or TI-84 Plus)

Attendance

Students with an absence will have two class periods upon their return to class to contact their teacher and arrange for make-up work and deadlines.

Tardies

Out of respect for your teacher and classmates, please get to class on time. If tardies become a problem, I will assign after school detentions.

Passes

A restroom pass is available. Take the red lanyard, take care of business, and hustle back to class.

Food/Drink and Cellphones

No food will be allowed in class. No exceptions. Water is okay with a lid. You will be required to put your phone in the your backpack the whole period.

School Laptops: You will be assigned a laptop computer for the year. You must report any damage right away or you will be held responsible.

Academic Integrity (adapted from WCSD6 academic integrity policy)

In education, we are continually studying the ideas of others. It is important, in our speaking and writing, that we acknowledge these ideas and give credit where it is due. Plagiarism is using other people’s words or ideas without clearly stating the source of that information. Plagiarism and cheating are serious offenses and will be treated accordingly. The following are examples of plagiarism and cheating:

  1. Copying someone else’s assignment or allowing someone else to copy your assignment. This includes sharing and/or collaborating on work online or through social media such as Facebook, and then passing off this work as your own.

  2. Substituting synonyms for someone else’s word choice or restating someone else’s ideas in your own words, or copying information from books, websites, or other sources without citing the source and providing documentation in the form of a bibliography/works cited. This includes paraphrasing.

  3. Handing in another individual’s work as your own.

  4. Dividing questions on an assignment so that students answer only a portion of the assignment and then use each other’s answers to complete the assignment. Although group work and cooperative learning are often encouraged, individual assignments must remain the work of the individual student. Always ask your teacher if an assignment may be completed with others and turned in as such. Do not assume it is allowed.

  5. Using plots, characters, theories, opinions, concepts, designs, and ideas from other sources (people, books, films, music recordings, television, websites or any other media) and presenting them as your own work.

  6. Copying answers from a classmate’s quiz or test paper, using a cheat sheet, or sharing answers during a testing situation.

  7. Falsifying data, conclusions, and answers and presenting them as fact.

Plagiarism and cheating have no place in the academic arena, and they are in violation of the GREELEY-EVANS DISTRICT 6 Code of Conduct. The following process will be followed for such actions:

  1. Student(s) who are found guilty of plagiarism or cheating will earn no credit for the assignment, project, or test. The student(s) who contributed to the offense (i.e. shared information or answers) will also earn no credit, whether or not the student(s) benefited personally from the information. Parents or guardians will be notified, and the IB Director, school administrator and the appropriate counselor(s) will be informed.

  2. A record of the incident will be included in the GREELEY-EVANS DISTRICT 6 student disciplinary file. Should a student accumulate two incident reports for plagiarism or cheating, a meeting with the student, parent or guardian and the IB Director will be scheduled to determine further disciplinary action.

  3. In accordance with the GREELEY-EVANS DISTRICT 6 Code of Conduct, students found guilty of plagiarism or cheating may be suspended.
