What is Black?
Readers at this level really get hooked on reading. Silent reading takes off at this level and readers will sit and read for long periods of time. Readers at the black level are getting into series books (Goosebumps, Diary of a Wimpy Kid). Encourage reading these series as it will help your child build fluency, silent reading speed, endurance, and the habit of reading. Readers at this level will become proficient in both fiction and nonfiction in addition, the vocabulary demands at this level increase in density and sophistication. Black level readers are reading a chapter book a week.

What can you do at home?
Ask your child, “Can you find anything inside the word to help you know what it means?”
Encourage finding a series your child would love. Ask: What chapter-book series are you reading? Why?
Ask, what are you reading? What would you like to read about? Let’s try to find a book that you might like...
