More than one billion birds die each year after striking glass. Nearly half of these collisions happen in residential areas. This is one of the leading human-caused sources of bird mortality and it is entirely preventable.
Bird Safe Utah, a committee of the Great Salt Lake Audubon, works to reduce bird collisions with glass buildings. We partner with homeowners, businesses, and institutions to retrofit hazardous windows with bird-safe materials and conduct on-site collision surveys. We also collaborate with planners and architects to incorporate bird-safe glass and design into new projects, and provide guidance on bird-friendly landscaping that supports birds while reducing collision risks
Protect birds from glass. Design landscapes with intention. Take action today.

Bird Safe Windows Network (BSWN) brings together institutions, businesses, and communities ready to take action to make buildings bird-friendly. Powered by Great Salt Lake Audubon, BIrd Safe Utah's BSWN equips volunteers and nonprofit partners with proven protocols, collision survey tools, training, and step-by-step implementation resources to launch and grow a Residential Install Program in your community or city. When we all work together
Join the Bird Safe Windows Network and get equipped with a start-up kit, standardized protocols, and hands-on training resources. Then launch your online survey to identify homes with bird–window collisions, target outreach, and take immediate action with effective retrofit solutions.
Once home owners complete the survey, a team member reaches out to explain the program, confirm data on bird strikes, and schedule an installation.
Our team visits the homeowner’s property, identify high-risk windows, complete the necessary waivers and intake forms, and then proceed with installation.
Birds are saved! Teams then input the installation site data into their tracking database and follow up with the recipient to ensure there are no more strikes!
Anyone is welcome to join the Bird Safe Windows Network! We are especially interested in partnering with local Audubon chapters, Universities, and anyone involved in conservation.

Great Salt Lake Audubon (greatsaltlakeaudubon.org) launched its Residential Install Program in 2025 after Bird Safe Utah Chair, Punita Koustubhan, observed that many homeowners experienced bird-window collisions but lacked practical solutions. Following a demonstration installation by Bird Divert at a volunteer home, she partnered with a bird-safe decal manufacturer to create a scalable install model.
The program quickly expanded to dozens of homes across Utah and has since grown to include institutional outreach through the Bird Safe By Design team. Bird Safe Utah operates as a committee of Great Salt Lake Audubon, with ongoing support from GSLA and partnership with Tracy Aviary.
