Graduation Requirements - Class of 2028 & Beyond
The Kansas State Board of Education has updated the high school graduation requirements for the Class of 2028 and beyond. The number of credits required for a student remains at 23 credits, but there will be changes to some requirements, including English/Communications, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), P.E./Health, and requirements called Postsecondary Assets.
The new graduation requirements were shared with the Board of Education in November of 2023.

English Communications
English Communications
A student has to earn 3.5 credits of English and .5 (a semester) of Communications. (4.0 credits of English are required for NCAA and qualified admissions.)
Examples of communications courses include:
Professional communications
Public speaking
Competitive debate
Competitive speech and acting
Business communications
21st-century journalism
Media and Public Relations
Social Studies
Social Studies
A student has to earn 3 credits of social studies.
Math

A student has to earn 3 credits of math.
Science
Science
A student has to earn 3 credits of science.
STEM
STEM
A student has to earn 1 credit of a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) course.
Possible courses include:
4th year of math or
4th year of science or
1 credit of any application-level CTE class.
PE / Health

A student has to earn .5 (a semester) in Physical Education and .5 (a semester) in Health.

A student has to earn 1 credit in Fine Arts.
Financial Literacy

A student has to earn .5 credit (a semester) in Financial Literacy.

Students need to earn 6.5 credits in elective courses.

Students need to earn at least 2 of the assets listed below:
ACT Composite Score (21+)
Advanced Placement Exam (3+)
ASVAB (Per requirements of military branch selected)
Client-Centered Project - addresses authentic workplace problems under an instructor's supervision
Community Service (40+ hours)
Complete Board of Regents Curriculum
CTE Scholar
Eagle Scout or Gold Scout
Industry-Recognized Certification (list maintained by CCR/CTE office)
International Baccalaureate Exam (4+)
SAT Score (1200+)
Seal of Biliteracy (Gold or Silver)
Senior Exit Interview
State Assessment (Score of 3 or 4 - one per subject area assessment)
State CTSO officer
WorkKeys Level (Silver+)
Workplace Learning Experience directly related to a students' Individual Plan of Study
Youth Apprenticeship - a work-based learning opportunity that connects a KSDE-approved pathway to an employer's Registered Apprenticeship program
2+ High School Athletics/Activities - two different activities or two seasons/years of the same activity
4-H Kansas Key Award
9+ Hours of College Credit
95% Attendance in High School
