Traditionally, students earned A’s, B’s, and C’s. Why switch to B, A, M, E? Why doesn’t homework "count" towards my grade? Why am I assessed on my Habits of Work? What are Transferable Skills?
I answer these questions with a question…
"What is the purpose of grading and the meaning behind grades?"
My answer is that "ALL students can learn!" My second answer is that consistent feedback on student learning can increase student achievement. Therefore, the emphasis of Proficiency Based Grading (PBG) is on student learning and not earning arbitrary "grades." “Education should not be about the accumulation of points for a letter, but the accumulation and meaningful application of knowledge.”
