Early Steps to College

Since 2013, many high school seniors have started taking the first step into their college career by getting some college credits while finishing their last year of high school. And this year, that's exactly what Proctor Jr./Sr. High School senior Camdon “Scooby” Kimball is doing.
Camdon is attending the Community College of Vermont (CCV) to study business and marketing, with the intention of owning his own business one day.
He is the only senior this year to be doing early college as a Proctor student.
“My sister did early college, which gave me the idea, and it’s just a very good program that I’ve heard from a lot of other people,” Camdon said.
Camdon goes to at least one in-person class a week for three hours at most, then the rest is done online.
Even though he is not at the high school, Scooby is still able to play in sports at Proctor. “Although I’m not technically a Proctor High School student, I’m still able to play sports, and I do enjoy it,” Camdon says.
Students have two options around the Rutland area to choose from when applying to early college: Castleton (VTSU) and Community College of Vermont (CCV).
Camdon absolutely recommends that future students take up this opportunity. “It’s a great tool and a great opportunity. You can get further education for free. I was able to get two years of early college free,” Scooby says.
“The college you choose will determine how many years you have to pay for, also the program and plan will help determine it,” he added.
When you finish early college and would like to transfer to another college, you will most likely be able to bring all of your credits over and continue your studies.
According to the Vermont State College System's statistics, a record of 377 students from every county went to early college programs at CCV and VTSU (Castleton) in the fall of 2024.
