Proctor High School just got a new school counselor this year: Mr. Dalton Cummins.
“I first fell in love with Vermont when I was in college and have always wanted to come back. When I saw the opening for the School Counselor role at Proctor, I immediately remembered the area and what a powerful and close-knit community it was,” Mr. Cummins says about coming to Proctor.
Mr. Cummins has been enjoying it here at Proctor so far. “I've been having a wonderful time! Everyone has been so incredibly welcoming and kind, and I've felt supported every step of the way as I get to know the campus and the community.”
Before he started working here, he was working at a trade school called National Technical Institute (NTI) where he was a mix of career service advisor and a student advisor. "I helped students find jobs after graduation while also making sure they had all the resources they needed to get to the finish line,” he says about that job.
Now that he’s at Proctor, Mr. Cummins says he is “truly excited to get settled in and start participating in more of the school's activities.”
As a counselor, Mr. Cummins helps students with stress and other problems.
And, like any other person in the world, he gets stressed. “I like to use a three-step process to handle stress: Identify, Interpret, and Intervene. I first identify what's causing me stress, then I interpret my feelings to understand what I'm truly feeling, and finally, I intervene in the best way possible.”
When outside of school he likes to walk his dog and play disc golf. “It's a fantastic way for me to unwind and decompress whenever I need a break.” If you want to know more about the sport, you can go ask him and he will talk all about it.
If students want to get to know Mr. Cummins, you can find him in room 105 or in the front of the school greeting you when you enter in the morning.
