The Proctor Girls Basketball team with a record of 9-12 has had a rollercoaster of a season but remained positive through it all.
This is the first year for Ken Stanley in the Proctor girls varsity coaching position. “At first I wasn't sure how this season was gonna go, but now we are starting to understand his coaching technique. He's doing really good for his first time coaching varsity,” senior Makayla French says.
Every athlete has pregame superstitions, the Lady Phantoms are no exception. Their routines revolve around having to get their stuff ready before bed, wearing their hair in a braid or ponytail, reading books, and practicing shots from many places around the court.
Senior captains Isabel Greb (10), Cadence Goodwin (20), and Makayla French (3) have all been leaders pushing the team towards each win. They credit former Coach Joe Mckerian, Proctor alum Lyndsey Elms, coach Stanley, and parents for making them the players they are today.
With only 11 players, the team is bonded. These girls are multi-sport athletes who play soccer, softball, ski, and run track. “The team chemistry is pretty great, we are with each other every day for three sports,” Zoe Reynolds says.
1329 Point scorer Isabel Greb led the Lady Phantoms throughout the season.
It was senior night on Monday, February 19th, in the Buggiani Gym. The Phantoms were on fire beating The Sharon Academy 64-23. Senior Isabel Greb had a stellar performance, scoring 50 points, a high school record for most points scored in one game. Madi Baker also had a career-high performance scoring 8 points.
It was a night to remember for Greb, Goodwin, and French as they were closing out the last games of the season. Coach Ken Stanley noted at the time, “We just want to go into the playoffs doing well.”
Games are not the only source for bonding. Cadence Goodwin, Makayla French, and Hailey Gipe agree that the rides home are the best memories, whether it's listening to many genres of music or sleeping. “My favorite part of the season has been bus rides as a team,” Gipe said.
Lady Phantoms finished off their season in Townshend on February 28, losing 57-38 to Leland and Gray. Greb once again led the Phantoms with 20 points and four steals. French finished her career scoring nine points and 11 rebounds.
