Phantoms Softball is Making a Run of a Lifetime

Proctor’s female athletes over the years have always dominated the sports industry winning championships for all sports, except softball. The Proctor Girls softball team hasn’t won a championship since 2012. They have come very close to winning a championship but always come up short in the end.
But this year it looks like they may go all the way. As of June 4 they are 16-1 after they won their first playoff game 31-4 against Caledonia United.
No one knows why Proctor hasn’t won a softball championship. It all starts with the coaches and Proctor has had some good ones. From 2012 -2023 Abby Bennett was the softball coach; she actually was coaching for the 2012 championship win. Thomas Lubaszewski took over in 2024 ending his first season 13-4.
It matters how strict the coaches are and how far they are willing to push their players to make them better. Next comes the players. With the loss of 4 seniors last year, including veteran pitcher Cadance Goodwin, who had multiple no hitters in her career, this could’ve been a tough year.
However, Olivia Graham, a junior, has filled in the spot for the ace pitcher and has some no hitters herself.
“I did not expect that we were going to be a good team,” Captain Aleea Richardson said, noting how happy she was to be wrong.
But this year is different, blowing teams out of the water beating Twin Valley 26-4, but last year they lost to teams that they could’ve beaten by big margins.
Proctor Softball has a lot of young talent, but to be fair they have been beating terrible teams that don’t even know how to play softball. Blue Mountain is a 10-4 team, and people think they shouldn’t be in the same division as Proctor, but they are and since Blue Mountain is in the middle of nowhere they have to play D-3, D-2 schools, sometimes D-4 schools once a year. The Phantoms are having one of the greatest runs in the last 13 years. They could be a number one contender for a championship, but will have some obstacles in the way but, overall, I think Proctor has a very good chance at winning a championship
Their only loss was to their arch rival West Rutland 4-6. West Rutland beat Proctor 6-4 but later Proctor beat them 8-2. West Rutland is a good team but not expected to be a dominant team at the end of the season and playoffs. Yet they appear to be the only challenge for the Phantoms.
“ I want to think that all the teams are going to be the same so I don’t want to think that they are terrible. I want to keep the same mentality for every game and give it my all,” Aleea said.
“My expectations are to go to a championship and have a winning record,” Aleea said.
It might be the last championship for a while due to soccer and basketball not winning a championship for a while. In the two other sports that Proctor has, the girls' last championship was in 2022 in soccer.
