Te Reo Māori

Using Te Reo in kura communications and documents.

Te Kura Tuatahi o Te Koau - Grant's Braes School is committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, therefore, our communications should aim to include Māori kupu (words), peha (phrases), kīwaha (idioms) and pūrākau (stories). By doing this, we are effectively sharing mātauraka (knowledge) and mana (power/authority) to our hāpori (community).

This glossary is designed to provide some understanding of the commonly used Māori words or concepts seen in communications from our kaiako, tumuaki and kura.

Please note:

Some of the words have no parallel meaning in English, therefore cannot be aptly translated. The full meaning and context is lost in translation. The translations used in the glossary may have other meanings and/or a wider context. Words in te reo Māori may have literal or spiritual meanings.
