The Primary Talent Pool program is for highly capable students who are in first, second or third grade. Kindergarten students can be referred for selection by their teacher during the second semester only. Once students are selected for the PTP program, they remain in the program until the end of their third grade year. Parents of newly qualified PTP students will receive a letter and permission form for participation in September. Returning students will remain enrolled until the end of their third grade year. If a parent wishes to opt out of PTP services a written form must be filed at the beginning of EACH school year.
Kentucky recommends students in this Talent Pool represent the top 5% district-wide in each of the following areas: Specific Academic Areas (Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies). General Intelligence, Creativity, Leadership, Visual/Performing Arts; totaling 25% of the student population. This program gives teachers an opportunity to provide enrichment and differentiated lesson plans (on an as-needed basis) to the selected students. These students may also receive enrichment via resource (pull-out) services with a gifted and talented teacher.
* Differentiation/cluster grouping provided by the classroom teacher on an as-needed basis.
* Collaboration/consultation may also occur between the regular classroom teacher and the gifted program teachers or coordinator.
* Small group pull out sessions will be offered to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade PTP students. Times and dates will vary depending on space, student numbers, and areas of need.
Participation in the PTP program does not guarantee gifted services as the child reaches fourth grade and should not be confused with being formally identified for the Gifted and Talented Program. Each child will have to meet Gifted and Talented Program Criteria at the end of their third grade year or beyond in order to continue receiving GT services. Grant County’s Gifted Education program (GATE) is designed for exceptional students who are identified as possessing demonstrated or potential ability to perform at an exceptionally high level in general intellectual aptitude (IQ), specific academic aptitude (language arts, mathematics, science, social studies), creative or divergent thinking, psychosocial or leadership skills, or in the visual or performing arts (dance, drama, vocal music, instrumental music).
Gifted and Talented Services are offered to all formally identified students. The process for formal identification begins at the end of Third Grade, but continues through 12th grade. The final step of the process involves further testing at the beginning of Fourth Grade (or thereafter). Next, a Selection Committee from each school meets and lists the names of students meeting the normed and standardized requirements for Gifted and Talented Services. Finally, a letter of notification of acceptance to receive services is sent to parents. If a child does not meet the requirements, a letter of notification is sent to the parents to inform them of the rationale for the Selection Committee’s decision. Only students who were referred by a teacher but were not accepted will receive this notification. If at any time you have questions about your student's scores in relation to GT referral or qualification, please reach out to our G/T Coordinator.
