Starting in the 2023-2024 school year, Cyprus High School in Magna, Utah requires Freshman and Sophomore students to maintain a 3.0 CPA to walk at graduation and attend school-run dances.
Cyprus High School wants to encourage students to attend class very often because skipping class has been a big issue in Cyprus. A lot of students do not like to show up to class and attend, which has made the Administrators retaliate, trying to get everyone to go to class. The required 3.0 CPA will be in effect for future Cyprus students also, only the Juniors and Seniors avoided it in the current 2024 2025 school year due to the earlier years when they only used to require a 2.0 CPA. Cyprus is affecting a lot of the Freshman and Sophomore students in a negative way with this new change.
Harlen Mitchell, a Sophomore student at Cyprus High School explained, “I don’t think the CPA for Freshman and Sophomore students should’ve been raised because some people may not be able to meet that 3.0.” “I like am almost sprinting to classes trying to get on time because tardies are a big part of your CPA,” said Mitchell after I asked him how school has been like trying to get
a 3.0 CPA. After asking Mitchell how the need to achieve a 3.0 CPA has affected him, he said, “I definitely get to class quicker but also I am stressing about unexcused absences or tardies.”
“Trying to get a 3.0 made me lose sleep because I don’t want to go to class early but I have to,” said Crisopher Macias, another Sophomore Student at Cyprus High School. “I don’t like the school administration very much after them deciding we have to get a 3.0 CPA,” said Macias after I asked him about the impression he has of the school administration. I learned that even though the requirement is a 3.0 CPA “not a lot” of people are motivated to go to class still. “I feel like if you want to walk at graduation then try to get it,” Macias explained.
This change has caused a very negative impact on the students and the way they go throughout the school trying to achieve a 3.0 CPA.
