An exciting and vibrant opportunity presents itself to Cyprus High School students who are passionate about music and interested in joining a community of welcoming, talented peers. Cyprus Choirs are hosting auditions on April 16, right after school in the choir room for any current Cyprus students. With nearly half of its current students graduating, the program is seeking new singers looking to thrive in a community known for fostering growth, creating unforgettable memories, and gaining lifelong friendships. All students are invited to come and showcase their musical abilities. Any incoming freshmen interested in the program should keep an eye out for more information to come, as freshman auditions will be held separately.
While a significant portion of choir students are preparing for graduation, the choir department is urging any Cyprus student, regardless of past musical experience, to join the program for the upcoming academic year. The significant drop in numbers puts the program at risk of dissolving without an abundance of new members and interest joining. Any student looking to be a part of the school’s artistic community is encouraged to consider Cyprus Choirs. Among other reasons, students pick choir to help keep a rounded high school experience and attractive resume for opportunities outside of school. New voices are needed to uphold traditions and sustain the program’s award-winning reputation.
For many, choir opens new doors for its members, giving them support to learn, grow, and become. Senior Maple Davis, who has been a member of Cyprus Choirs since freshman year, highlights her favorite parts of choir and the opportunities that she has been provided with. “Choir has provided me with many experiences I wouldn't have otherwise had,” Davis said, mentioning performances in Salt Lake City’s Tabernacle and the new school's auditorium, and emphasizing her enjoyment of learning challenging music in various languages. When asked what advice she would give to anyone interested in auditioning, Davis stated, “My biggest advice is to make sure you pick a song within your vocal range, if you don’t know what range you are, it is easy to look it up online. Be confident, the worst thing you can do is not audition. If you’re interested in auditioning, go for it!” She also believes anyone who enjoys listening to music, singing, or playing instruments would have a great time in choir.
Students interested in joining the choir programs at Cyprus High School may look beyond the current variables but also into the long-lasting effects. When speaking with Cyprus alumnus Zachary Linnett, a 2016 graduate, he stated, “Choir helped me to be more outgoing and left me with lifelong friendships that still contribute to my life today.” Reflecting on his time in high school, Linnett mentioned that being a part of the choir community was the reason for many of his favorite memories and experiences throughout his teenage years. He not only grew through these experiences but also acquired valuable new skills. For instance, Linnett added, “Choir taught me how to read music, which I still use a lot, especially when playing guitar.”
As audition dates approach, more information on steps for interested students will be released. The Cyprus Choir’s Instagram page will provide ongoing updates regarding auditions. Auditions for incoming freshmen will be held at Matheson Jr. High and Brockbank Middle on separate dates. Further details will be provided for all of the 8th grade choir directors to be passed on to students. For any questions, choir director, Christopher Rose, will be happy to answer either by email or by talking to him in room 1711. All current choir members are also available to answer any questions or concerns you may have.
