“Big Mike” at Cyprus ASP, March 6, 2025
Cyprus student Michael Najera attends an after school program that is run by James Hamell on March 6, 2025.
Najera, Cyprus After school program attendee was asked a series of questions regarding his experience over the years since he first attended. In response to one of the questions asked about how much he liked ASP and why, he said “I rate it a 10 because it has great opportunities like making friends and building leadership skills.” Najera has been attending a series of after school programs since middle school and has said his best experiences have been when James Hamell has been the coordinator. “I come everyday after school, all week,” says Najera. Through this incredible attendance of his, he’s been exposed to all sorts of people and opportunities. An example being the coin toss for the football game at the beginning of this year, “that was my favorite memory of the year,” he said. Najera has definitely expressed his gratitude and respect for the after school program here at Cyprus and went as far as hoping to do the same thing for others when he grows up.
Now that we’ve gotten Najera’s point of view as an attendee, let’s get an insight from James Hamell who runs the show. Just like Najera, Hamell was interviewed and here are some of his most powerful responses. When asked what his biggest goal is for the program and all kids that attend, we got quite the response, “My biggest goal is to create a space where participants feel supported and empowered—academically, socially, and emotionally. I want youth to develop critical thinking skills, confidence in their abilities, and a sense of belonging. An integral part is helping them learn and embrace our guiding principle: autonomy with accountability. Beyond that, I hope the program fosters curiosity and a love of learning that transcends school, igniting a passion for exploring new ideas, asking questions, and seeking knowledge in all aspects of life.” Hamell strives to be a strong but understanding and knowledgeable role model for all youth he encounters, hoping he’ll be given a chance to teach them what they already know deep down inside. That they are capable of doing whatever they set their mind to.
A message that Hamell has for the adults with youth in their life that they want to make an impact on is this, “I have worked with youth for over two decades in varying capacities, from aide to administrator. Each experience has reinforced the importance of adaptability, relationship-building, and fostering a safe and inclusive environment. Past roles taught me that youth thrive when they feel heard and valued, so I prioritize programs that are engaging, culturally responsive, and participant-driven. I have also learned that collaboration is integral to making a lasting impact”. Hamell enjoys practicing what he preaches and hopes that all of the people in his life succeed.
