Reading at Home
Each week, students have the opportunity to check out 2 English books and one French book from the library. These books can be taken home and read each night. Reading with 1st graders is so important because it helps build sight word vocabulary, fluency, accuracy, and a love of reading. There are many ways you can read with your child. DYAD reading, cloze reading and echo reading are just a few of the ways to make reading fun. It is also important to read to your child so they have a good example of what fluent reading wounds like and they have the luxury of listening and getting lost in the story.
DYAD reading - Parent and child sit side by side. The parent points to the words while reading them out loud. The child reads the words out loud at the same time as the parent.
Cloze Reading - Parent and shild sit side by side. The parent reads most of the words while the child follows along with their eyes and mind. Parent stops at certain words and has the child read those words.
Echo Reading - Parent and shild sit side by side. The parent read one sentence and the shild reads the same sentence the parent just read. The parent reads the next sentence and the child read the sentence the parent just read. Continue until the end of the story.
