Social Dance

This class is designed to introduce high school students to various forms of ballroom and social dance with an emphasis on leading/following and basic footwork skills.  This is a beginning social dance class for students who have never danced or never done social dance.  This class is for enthusiastic students who are willing to learn partner dance forms such as cha-cha, foxtrot, and other Latin forms, waltz, triple swing, and folk or other traditional, social and cultural dances.

Dance 1010 (CE)

This is a concurrent enrollment class offered at Granger High School through Weber State University. You must enroll in Weber University and register for this course through Weber.

An introduction to dance providing a knowledge base from which to experience dance from a variety of viewpoints: historically, culturally, aesthetically, critically, and creatively. This course takes a close-up look at the rules, messages, and meanings embodied in dance around the world using lecture, class discussions, group presentations, video observations, movement experiences, writing exercises, in class written exams, and reflective activities to synthesize material and make course content personally relevant. Students are expected to attend dance concerts and cultural dance experiences outside regularly scheduled class time.

The course contributes to an understanding of dance/movement as a means for recognizing and appreciating difference.  Embracing difference in this way is based upon the assumption that movement (ranging from pedestrian to highly stylized actions) reveals underlying values that are part of the social, cultural and aesthetic traditions that are apparent in contemporary cultures.   As contemporary students within the United States, each of us is in some way tied to value systems and traditions. In designing an open forum in which to analyze and discuss those ties, this course will provide insight into both personal and cultural identity as well as appreciating difference. Dance Company

Dance Company is a choreography/ performance dance group with a required audition in the Spring.  The focus of this company is on dance as an art form with an emphasis on contemporary modern dance.  This is a unique opportunity for dancers to experience dance in a way uncommon in a studio dance class but directly related to dance in a university or in a professional setting.  Each dancer will work to improve dance technique, gain improvisational skills, learn to choreograph, and perform various forms of dance. Students will create their own dances, work with their peers, learn from guest choreographers, and be part of the creative process of putting on a concert. This team rehearses during 4th period and afterschool everyday for a total of 10 hours a week. For any questions contact bcwinkleman@graniteschools.org
